Democratic senator Heidi Heitkamp outs women as victims of sexual abuse and rape in ad attacking her GOP opponent - and is forced to apologize

'This is a major mistake on our campaign's part. I can't say I'm sorry enough. I am so so sorry this happened,' she said in an emotional radio interview
Democratic Sen. Heidi Heitkamp offered a personal apology Tuesday and is reaching out to women she mistakenly identified in a campaign ad as victims of domestic violence, sexual abuse and rape.
Heitkamp says she recently learned that several of the women named in the newspaper ad either hadn't authorized the use of their names or are not survivors of abuse.
The Heitkamp campaign, looking to attack her Republican opponent Kevin Cramer, ran an open letter on Sunday in several North Dakota newspapers addressed to Cramer to show him 'what prairie tough looks like.'
But several of the women named in the ad took to social media to note they had not given permission for their names to be used nor were some of them victims.
The ad slammed Cramer for comments he made on Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation to the Supreme Court where he said 'tough people' do not identify with the national conversation around sexual assault.
Heitkamp is the most endangered Democratic senator running for re-election. Her and Cramer's matchup is seen as crucial in the battle for control of the upper chamber.
Heitkamp went on a media blitz Tuesday to apologize. She called into conservative talk radio host Rob Port's show and podcast, posted on his SayAnythingBlog.com, to take personal responsibility.
'This is a huge mistake that anyone was included on this letter that should not have been included,' she said in an emotional interview where her voice cried several times.
'The execution here was horrible,' she noted.
'This is a major mistake on our campaign's part. I can't say I'm sorry enough. I am so so sorry this happened. I'm trying to reach out and make sure we make it right,' she added.
Heitkamp said she believed the names on the ad came from a Facebook feed that was sent to the campaign. 'There should have been direct verification from the campaign. There obviously wasn't,' she said.
'We work through advocates who had worked with victims and they provided the names and now we're trying to work through what exactly happened and how this mistake was made,' Heitkamp said, saying there would be an internal review in her campaign.
'This was incompetent. This was wrong,' she said. 'This should have never happened.'
The letter featured in the ad had 127 names at the bottom. It's unclear how many were misidentified or named without permission.
'We recently discovered that several of the women's names who were provided to us did not authorize their names to be shared or were not survivors of abuse, Heitkamp said in a statement. 'I deeply regret this mistake and we are in the process of issuing a retraction, personally apologizing to each of the people impacted by this and taking the necessary steps to ensure this never happens again.
