They are likely 128 bit hashes of some sort. But MD5 and SHA1 are 160 bits (and later SHA algos produce longer hashes).

Hashes are uses for a wide variety of uses. Google "hash table". My guess is that something meant to speed up retrieval time is putting bytes into the wrong database field.
