You can Love someone AND defend yourself from someone's antics.
I know the snake bites, and I defend myself from the bite, if neccessary with force.
This does not prevent me from recognizing its soul as being infinite and loving in its very core. It is a part of me. Had I taken a different path, I'd be in the snake's position very easily.
