Note that the original script had human minds enslaved in a distributed computing system that actually ran the Matrix that deceived the humans.
"Where did they derive that idea" of humans being used as battery power? From the studio executives, who forced the writers to change the story, supossedly because of their belief that the viewing public would not understand the concept of distributed computing.
