Democrat Rep. Suggests Kushner Had Journalist Murdered, Backlash Ensues

House Intelligence Committee member Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-TX) promoted a conspiracy theory without any evidence on Friday, saying that Jared Kushner may have been behind the apparent murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

"Jared Kushner may have, with U.S. intelligence, delivered a hit list, an enemies list, to the crown prince, to MBS, in Saudi Arabia and that the prince may have acted on that, and one of the people he took action against is Mr. Khashoggi," Castro said on CNN.

CNN's Poppy Harlow offered some mild pushback to Castro's claims, saying, "Just to be clear Congressman, we don't have, I just want to be clear for our viewers, we do not have that reporting. I'm not sure where you are getting that from."

"But there has been reporting to the effect," Castro said, doubling down on his conspiracy theory. "I’ve seen reporting to that effect… that needs to be investigated."

Castro's baseless conspiracy theory was met with widespread condemnation on social media from members of the press and the Trump administration.

".@JoaquinCastrotx’s allegation is an outrageous slanderous lie without a shred of proof, it’s reprehensible for a sitting Congressman and supposed “news” outlets to continue citing an article that used unnamed sources and was completely debunked," White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders wrote on Twitter. "This has to be among the most irresponsible accusations ever leveled without a whit of evidence for it, one obviously reflecting full-blown TDS," conservative pundit Hugh Hewitt wrote

"This is so wildly irresponsible I don't even know where to start," Observer columnist John Schindler wrote. "Castro is on the HPSCI. He publicly blamed the IC here. He needs to be removed from the Committee immediately.

Castro later tried to claim that he "did not intend to accuse" Kushner of potentially being behind the apparent murder, even though that is exactly what he said on CNN.

"To be clear, I did not intend to accuse @jaredkushner of orchestrating anything," Castro wrote on Twitter. "Based on press reporting, I’m asking for Congress to open an investigation of whether any US Intelligence was shared with Saudi Arabia that led to political persecution or killing of #Khashoggi"

Saudi King Salman reportedly intervening to ease tensions after Khashoggi’s disappearance

Saudi Arabia’s King Salman has reportedly intervened to try to solve the growing issues surrounding the disappearance of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi.

What happened to Jamal Khashoggi?

Khashoggi disappeared after entering the Saudi consulate on Oct. 2 in Istanbul. He had been trying to finalize his divorce so that he could marry his fiancée. He frequently criticized the Saudi regime and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, including in his Washington Post column.

The Turkish government has claimed to have evidence that Saudi assassins killed Khashoggi after he entered the consulate. They have also named 15 Saudi men that they believe to be involved. Four of these men have ties to the Saudi royal family and the crown prince.

Why is King Salman getting involved?

According to a report from Reuters, which cited five anonymous sources “with links to the Saudi royal family,” King Salman has sent his nephew Prince Khaled al-Faisal, the governor of the Muslim holy city of Mecca and his most trusted aide, to Turkey to try to ease tensions that have been building between the two nations.

It was during this visit that Turkish and Saudi officials agreed to a joint investigation into Khashoggi’s death. One of the sources behind this report told Reuters, “The selection of Khaled, a senior royal with high status, is telling as he is the king’s personal adviser, his right hand man and has had very strong ties and a friendship with [Turkish President Recep Tayyip] Erdogan.”

King Salman bin Abdulaziz took over after his half brother, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, died in 2015. Both these kings were sons of King Abdulaziz ibn Saud who founded the kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1932.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met with King Salman on Tuesday. According to a news release from the State Department, the two men talked about the partnership between the two countries, and Pompeo “thanked the King for his commitment to supporting a thorough, transparent, and timely investigation of Jamal Khashoggi’s disappearance.”

Before this incident, the king had handed over much of the day-to-day operations of his kingdom over to the crown prince. While Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (referred to colloquially as MBS) has been praised for his reforms to the nation’s financial institutions, and his loosening of restrictions on things like cinema and women driving, he has also been ruthless against anyone he considered to be standing in the way of his rise to power.

What else?

The sources who spoke to Reuters said that King Salman was not initially aware of how bad the situation had gotten. One of the sources said, “The king started asking aides and MbS about it. MbS had to tell him and asked him to intervene when Khashoggi’s case became a global crisis.”

Another source, who reportedly has links to the Saudi royal court, speculated to Reuters that this incident could have implications for the future of the crown prince.

“Even if he is his favorite son, the king needs to have a comprehensive view for his survival and the survival of the royal family,” the source said.

Justice Department Launches Federal Probe Into Pennsylvania Church Sex-Abuse

The Justice Department (DOJ) has launched an investigation into at least six Roman Catholic dioceses in Pennsylvania over child sex abuse claims allegedly covered up by the church for decades.

It’s believed to be the first statewide probe opened by federal authorities on these cases, marking an unprecedented shift in the nation’s escalating scrutiny of the church. So far, at least thirteen states have announced their own investigation into such allegations.

According to the New York Times, seven of the eight dioceses in Pennsylvania communicated that they had received federal grand jury subpoenas from the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.

Roman Catholic dioceses in Philadelphia, Erie, Harrisburg, Scranton, Pittsburgh, Greensburg, and Allentown all received the subpoenas. The eighth, Altoona-Johnstown, did not respond to requests for comment.

A DOJ spokeswoman told The Epoch Times in an email the department generally “does not confirm, deny or otherwise comment” on the existence or non-existence of an investigation. The Associated Press first reported the DOJ investigation on Oct. 18.

The federal probe comes just months after Pennsylvania’s attorney general’s office publicly released a bombshell grand jury report that accused more than 300 “predator priests” across Pennsylvania of sexual abuse. At least 1,000 child victims were identified in the report while revealing that Church officials were complicit in a decades-long cover-up.

“This subpoena is no surprise considering the horrific misconduct detailed in the statewide grand jury report,” said the Diocese of Greensburg in a statement. “Survivors, parishioners and the public want to see proof that every diocese has taken sweeping, decisive and impactful action to make children safer.”

Many of the cases mentioned in the report took place as far back as the 1970s, meaning their cases are too old to revisit due to the statute of limitations. It is one of the main legal impediments prosecutors face. The statute of limitations is different in each state.

Tim Lennon, president of Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP), said the investigation is long overdue. Four statewide grand juries in Pennsylvania since 2003 identified around 500 alleged sexual predators among acting or former Catholic clergy, he said.

“In what other institution could you have 500 criminals and not be prosecuted?” asked Lennon, who said he was raped by a Catholic priest when he was a child.

Lennon said SNAP had asked the federal government three times since 2002 for a nationwide investigation of 15,000 active or retired Catholic clergy accused of being sexual predators.

“This is a first. Federal law enforcement has been awfully silent on the Catholic abuse problem, and it’s about time,” said Anne Barrett-Doyle, co-director of BishopAccountability.org, a U.S.-based resource center that tracks cases of clerical abuse worldwide.

She said the only other U.S. federal probe was of a bishop in Boston in the early 2000s.

In September, U.S. Catholic bishops said they would set up a hotline for accusations of sexual abuse against bishops and other church leaders, or allegations of cover-ups by such people.

Reps. Meadows and Jordan Lash Out at Rosenstein For Demanding Special “Classified” Format to Testify on Capitol Hill

Freedom Caucus Chairman Mark Meadows (R-NC) and Congressman Jim Jordan (R-OH) lashed out at Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein Friday afternoon over his demands for a special format to testify next week on Capitol Hill.

House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte announced Thursday that Rosenstein will appear on Capitol Hill October 24th for a closed-door, transcribed interview.

Rosenstein is demanding the interview be private and held in a SCIF (Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility) with multiple Republican lawmakers excluded.

Unfortunately only the House Judiciary and Oversight Chairs and ranking members will be present for the grilling.

According to the House Judiciary announcement, only 4 members from the House Oversight and Judiciary Committees will be present:

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) and House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) announced Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein will appear on October 24, 2018, for a transcribed interview conducted by Chairmen Bob Goodlatte and Trey Gowdy and Ranking Members Jerry Nadler and Elijah Cummings.

JIM JORDAN: Rod Rosenstein wants a SPECIAL format to testify: only 2 Rep and 2 Dem members of Congress asking questions in closed door classified setting.

Another example of the double standard. One set of rules for regular folks, a different set for the politically connected. Unacceptable.

MARK MEADOWS: Rod Rosenstein declines to show up before Congress and then asks for special treatment. He wants his interview to be private, in a SCIF, with multiple members excluded.

There should be NO double standard. Show up and tell the truth under the same conditions as everyone else. Meadows and Jordan want to ask Rod Rosenstein about his plot to wear a wire and oust Trump from office.

Former FBI lawyer James Baker appeared on Capitol Hill earlier Thursday for the second time to testify about Rosenstein’s plan to wear a wire and and the use of FISA warrants to oust President Trump from office.

Rep. Meadows emerged from the testimony Thursday calling for Rosenstein to “resign immediately.”

This is yet more proof that there is a two-tiered justice system in this country.
