My great uncle was a US soldier POW by the Germans. He was in a camp and returned emaciated. He spoke little of it but said that only certain Jews were targeted. Not all. Some knowingly escaped.
We never understood why certain groups were “escaping” under the watchful eyes of the Nazis. He was clear that it wasn’t money- they confiscated more than enough, there was chatter in the camps by Jews who knew of others Jews “but from a different type” being allowed to go.
It never made sense to him - or any of us- until NOW. The branches of Jewish were not compatible, which makes sense.
