As a Christian, I will add this thought as an ironic example: Many churches use the scriptures talking about Israel to support anything and everything Israel does, even when they've behaved really, really badly.

IMO, this is wrong. Upon close reading, "Israel" means the House of God that resides anywhere in the world and mostly in our own hearts. "Israel" in scripture does not refer to a Nation State carved out arbitrarily in the 1940s.
