I was just thinking about this and the seed bank, the forcing people to use Monsanto seeds that are genetically modified to not porduce more seeds so they have to be re purchased, banning of seed sharing etc etc.
It wouldn't be hard for them - when the time came - to introduce some form of kill switch at X level of maturity/exposure to round up/weedkiller whatever.
