The pattern was established by God that the second son would get the inheritance. The meaning of the pattern is that Jesus is the second Adam.

Abel, though dead was 'replaced' (Ge 4:25 ) by Seth who got the inheritance. His genealogy used the word 'lived' repeatedly, while that of Cain does not use it even once.

Noah fits that pattern as the fist and second son. He became fruitful after the flood.

Abraham was the second son of Terah. (do the math using ages given).

Again like Noah, Abram/Abraham build the pattern where Abraham is fruitful and mutiplying.

Isaac was the second Son.

Jacob was the second son.

Jacob/Israel builds the pattern. Though Jacob has a large family, he forfeits them as he approaches Esau, hoping that Esau will satiate his anger by killing them all before he gets to Jacob at the end of the procession. Esau does not kill them, but returns them to Israel who has been renamed in the death and resurrection scene wrestling with the angel of the Lord.

Judah is the 4th son, but becomes the second son because God says Simeon and Levi were not to be counted among the tribes of Israel.

Judah has three sons Er, Onan and Shelah. Er and Onan were both killed without heir, and Judah begets Pharez. Who is now the second son after Shelah.

Pharez has a twin, Zara, who was the first son who stuck his hand out of the womb and had a scarlet thread tied to it, but Pharez was born first, again as the usurping second son.

These are all prophetic riddles hidden in the literal-historical record to say that Jesus is the second Adam:

1Co 15:47 The first man [is] of the earth, earthy: the second man [is] the Lord from heaven.
