HistorianAnon. I asked why we didn't keep all of Mexico of a prof once, he said for the same reason they lost (the Western US) it, they could neither protect nor defend that land. Had we taken Mexico, we could not have helped those new Americans, the nation would have been too gangly.

 

We paid for the top half because they were desperate for money due to the dictatorship of Santa Anna. They later used it to settle debts with Spain and Britain. France would not take $ or 'no' for an answer, hence the Cinco de Mayo (Battle of Puebla). France eventually conquered Mexico and funded the Confederacy with an eye toward an American Empire. Gen Sheridan sent 50K armed American troops over the Mexican border to assist Mexico in ousting French Emperor Maximilian.
