If you register as Democrat you are on their mailing lists for updates and what not. Ditto for Republicans. You are not constrained to vote for any particular candidate. Freedom around elections is complete. You can register democrat and vote republican, independent, or for Buggs Bunny if you want to (yes I did this one year when the field was particularly bad).
