Trump Says His Transgender Policy Seeks to ‘Protect the Country’

Under the new proposal, gender would be defined on binary basis with no room for change.

US President Donald Trump attempted to downplay earlier reports that his administration seeks to radically change the current federal policy on transgender people, following outrage regarding the proposed alterations, Reuters reported Monday.

Responding to protests outside the White House and a wave of criticism on social media, Trump reportedly underscored that any proposals regarding transgender people are not set in stone and are subject to changes and revisions.

"We have a lot of different concepts right now. They have a lot of different things happening with respect to transgender right now," Trump said.

When asked whether he would vow to protect LGBT people, Trump replied that he seeks to "protect everybody."

"I'm protecting everybody. I want to protect our country," he said, according to Reuters.

Earlier on Sunday, The New York Times reported on a leaked plan from the Department of Health and Human Services to introduce a new definition of gender to the word of law, which would define citizens' gender by their birth genitalia and would not be subject to change during a person's life.

"Sex means a person's status as male or female based on immutable biological traits identifiable by or before birth," the department's memo said. "The sex listed on a person's birth certificate, as originally issued, shall constitute definitive proof of a person's sex unless rebutted by reliable genetic evidence."

Unsurprisingly, the report sparked widespread protest among people who identify themselves by other genders than they were assigned at birth.

"Defining 'sex' in this narrow language tailored to the talking points of anti-equality extremists is part of a deliberate strategy to eliminate federal protections for LGBTQ people," Chad Griffin, chairman of Human Rights Campaign, said, according to Telegraph.

Study finds that a traditional Chinese medicine is effective at treating liver cancer

Conventional treatments for cancer, such as chemotherapy and radiation, are known for targeting even healthy cells. The damage induced on healthy cells by non-selective targeting these cancer treatments lead to side effects like diarrhea, anemia, infertility, mood changes, and weight loss. To avoid these side effects, people are now turning to traditional medicine for potential cancer treatments. One study, which was published in the Journal of Evidence-Based Integrative Medicine, revealed that the traditional Chinese formulation known as Qingjie Fuzheng has anticancer activity.

Liver cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer death in both men and women. High mortality rates of liver cancer can be attributed to its poor prognosis since it’s difficult to treat it once it has already spread to other organs. Similar to other types of cancer, liver cancer is usually treated using chemotherapy or radiation. However, as previously mentioned, these types of therapy cause adverse side effects.

One alternative treatment for liver cancer is Qingjie Fuzheng. This traditional Chinese formulation is composed of four different herbs, namely: Hedyotis diffusa, malt, astragalus, and Scutellaria barbata. Aside from its anticancer activity, Qingjie Fuzheng also has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antibacterial activities. Although it is already used as an alternative cancer treatment, none of the previous studies conducted on it have determined the mechanism behind its anticancer activity.

A study conducted by researchers from Fujian University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Fujian Medical University was the first to identify the underlying mechanism behind Qingjie Fuzheng’s anticancer activity. The researchers were able to determine this using cell culture and animal model experiments. For the cell culture, the researchers made use of human and mice hepatocellular carcinoma cells since hepatocellular carcinoma is the most common type of liver cancer. Upon treatment of the cells with Qingjie Fuzheng, they were able to observe reduced cell viability, showing that Qingjie Fuzheng does have anticancer activity.

Bayer Loses Appeal Over Historic 'RoundUp' Cancer Lawsuit

Having successfully, closed on its $66 billion purchase of the agrochemical company Monsanto in June, we suspect Germany's Bayer AG, is more than a little concerned now after failing to persuade a judge to set aside a jury’s $289 million verdict in the first trial over allegations that its Roundup weed killer causes cancer.

As a reminder, in August, a San Francisco Jury awarded $289 million in damages to a former school groundskeeper, Dewayne Johnson, who said Monsanto's Roundup weedkiller gave him terminal cancer. The award consists of $40 million in compensatory damages and $250 million in punitive damages.

Johnson's trial was fast-tracked due to the severe state of his non-Hodgkins lymphoma, a cancer of the lymph system he says was triggered by Roundup and Ranger Pro, a similar glyphosate herbicide that he applied up to 30 times per year. His doctors didn't think he'd live to live to see the verdict.

Johnson testified that he had been involved in two accidents during his work in which he was doused with the product, the first of which happened in 2012. Two years later, the 46-year-old father of two was diagnosed with lymphoma - which has covered as much as 80% of his body in lesions.
