Federal prosecutors set up hotline to report clergy sex abuse

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in D.C. on Monday launched a tip line via phone and email for survivors of child sexual abuse by clergy to report the crimes. A group of criminal investigators, prosecutors and victim advocates from the Superior Court Division of the U.S. Attorney’s Office will review the information provided and determine if any of the complaints should be referred for prosecution.

In addition, the victim advocates will provide support and guidance to victims who report an issue. “Survivors of child sex abuse by a clergy who wish to share their experiences and/or those who have knowledge of such abuse are encouraged to report these incidents to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for potential criminal investigation and prosecution as part of the Office’s Superior Court Division intake process,” U.S. Attorney Jessie K. Liu said in a statement.

The hotline comes only a few days after the Justice Department opened an investigation of child sex abuse allegations in the Roman Catholic Church in Pennsylvania. That investigation is believed to be the first time the Justice Department has probed an organized religion on a large-scale basis.

The Clergy Abuse Reporting Line is 202-252-7008 and the email address is USADC.ReportClergyAbuse@usdoj.gov.

Hillary Clinton avoids punishment in Arkansas over secret emails

Arkansas’s bar has declined to sanction former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for her handling of her secret emails, rejecting a request that she face a misconduct investigation. The state Supreme Court’s office of professional conduct didn’t offer any explanation for its decision in an Oct. 17 letter to Ty Clevenger, the lawyer who’d asked for action.

“As in most other states, Arkansas’s bar prosecutors will go to perverse lengths to protect a politically-influential attorney. Lawyers with the right political connections can get away with just about anything, and it doesn’t seem to matter if they’re Republicans or Democrats,” Mr. Clevenger said. Mr. Clevenger had told Arkansas there was clear evidence Mrs. Clinton committed perjury in her explanation of her handling of her emails, and that she destroyed evidence by having her team delete tens of thousands of messages before the government had a chance to review them.

A bar official refused the complaint last year and Mr. Clevenger asked the professional conduct committee to step in. They declined. “After review, it was the decision of the sub-panel to affirm the executive director’s decision and dismiss your grievance filed in connection with the alleged conduct of the respondent attorney,” wrote Joseph Hickey, chairman of the committee.

Mrs. Clinton is currently suspended from the Arkansas bar for having not completed required ongoing certification training. But she could reactivate her license by taking the training, Mr. Clevenger said when he first filed his grievance in 2016. Now, Mr. Clevenger says it doesn’t appear the committee did any investigation of Mrs. Clinton, despite taking two years to decide on his grievance. “The reason the Arkansas committee did not offer an explanation is because they can’t admit that they dismissed the case for political reasons,” he said. Mr. Clevenger said he is considering asking the state Supreme Court to step in and force a review of Mrs. Clinton’s bar status. He has fought and lost similar grievances in other jurisdictions against Mrs. Clinton and her legal team that was directly responsible for the review and deletion of her emails, which she kept on a server at her home in New York, in a move the FBI said risked exposing national security secrets.

Cory Booker unveils bill to create taxpayer-funded savings account for every American born in U.S.

Sen. Cory Booker announced a new bill Monday that would establish a taxpayer-funded savings account for every American at birth. “Today, nearly one in three American families have zero to negative wealth, and it’s hard to get ahead if you begin life behind the starting line,” said Mr. Booker, New Jersey Democrat. The “American Opportunity Account Act” would essentially create a trust fund for every U.S. citizen born in the U.S. After age 18, the money can be accessed but only used for certain “human and financial capital investments” like buying a house or paying for higher education.

At birth, every child will be given $1,000 deposit into their new “Opportunity” account managed by the Treasury Department. Funds will accrue about 3 percent interest. Every year, the account will receive an additional deposit, though the amount will vary depending on family income. For example, a child whose family brings in $25,100 or less will get around $2,000 each year. As the plan targets income inequality, the more money a family makes, the less money is deposited into the account. A family of four that makes over $81,000 would only receive $250 in supplemental payments. The senator plans on paying for these savings account by increasing taxes, specifically estate and inheritance taxes. Mr. Booker will formally introduce the bill after the November midterms.
