ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Cooperation between Ankara and Washington was discussed in a telephone call between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and US counterpart Donald Trump.

"President Erdogan and President Trump reaffirmed their determination for the normalization and development of the Turkey-US cooperation in every area, and discussed the cooperation in the fight against terror, including FETO," stated a readout of the call from Erdogan's office on Monday.

The two strategic NATO allies have experienced strained diplomatic relations. Trump is yet to appoint an ambassador to Turkey. Both countries have imposed sanctions and tariffs amid a trade dispute as the lira has plummeted in value. And Ankara would like to see Washington stop supporting the mostly Kurdish Peoples' Protection Units in the fight against ISIS in Syria.

"The two leaders discussed the bilateral relations and exchanged views regarding the fight against terror, the Jamal Khashoggi case and the latest developments in Syria," added the statement.

Turkey has vowed to reveal the "naked truth" over the death of the Saudi journalist who disappeared after walking into the Istanbul consulate on October 2.

"The two leaders agreed on the need to clear up the Jamal Khashoggi incident with all aspects," added Erdogan.

The US-led anti-ISIS coalition and Turkish forces have agreed to conduct joint patrols around Manbij in Syria.

"The importance of the immediate implementation of the roadmap concerning Manbij was stressed and the importance of the Idlib agreement was highlighted during the phone call," added Erdogan.

The United States has said implementation of the joint patrols is moving at "a reasonable pace."

"We believe that we have now met the direction from President Erdogan and President Trump from the security perspective around Manbij. And we’ll be ready soon to transition into the vetting of individuals and the – and the political piece of Manbij," US Gen. Joseph Dunford, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters during a media roundtable on October 18.

Erdogan and Trump also discussed the return of pastor Andrew Brunson to the United States after being detained on charges of supporting the Kurdistan Workers' Party and coup supporters.

The White House did not immediately release a statement on the telephone call.
