Records Contradict Gillum’s Story He Received ‘Hamilton’ Ticket From His Brother

Text messages show Florida gubernatorial candidate received ticket from undercover FBI agent posing as developer

Florida gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum's campaign said last month that he received a ticket from his brother to see Hamilton on Broadway back in 2016, but newly released records show an undercover FBI agent, who was posing as a developer, bought him the ticket. The Florida Democrat's campaign sent out a press release on Sept. 4 saying that he received a ticket for the show from his brother, Marcus. The campaign said, "After the trip, Mayor Gillum learned Marcus Gillum had obtained that ticket in a swap with [former lobbyist] Adam Corey for a concert ticket."

Gillum's campaign repeated this narrative Tuesday in response to the release of records given to the ethics commission, according to the Tampa Bay Times. "These records vindicate and add more evidence that at every turn I was paying my own way or was with my family, for all trips, including picking up tickets from my brother, Marcus, who was with a group of his own friends," Gillum said in a statement. "But this isn't about a Broadway show, it's about a sideshow, because Ron DeSantis and his associates have no vision, no healthcare plan, and are running the most false, negative campaign in Florida history. Floridians deserve better." Text messages indicate, however, that Gillum knew the ticket was a favor from someone he thought was a developer.

Gillum's Republican opponent, Rep. Ron DeSantis, asked him during Sunday's debate whether he paid for the Hamilton tickets, prompting him to avoid a direct answer. "First of all, I am a grown man," Gillum replied. "My wife and I take vacations and we pay for our own vacations … I don't take free trips from anybody. I'm a hard-working person, I know that may not fit your description of what you think people like me do, but I've worked hard for everything that I've gotten in my life."

The Republican Governors Association slammed Gillum for being "caught in an extraordinary lie," adding that he "can’t be trusted to be honest with Florida voters." "After claiming that he never took anything that he didn’t pay for himself, Andrew Gillum has now been caught in an extraordinary lie," RGA communications director Jon Thompson said. "With new evidence showing that Gillum did in fact accept Hamilton tickets from FBI agents, he has once again proven that he can’t be trusted to be honest with Florida voters.

Mail Bomb Found at George Soros Home

Police defused an explosive device placed in George Soros’ mailbox Monday. Officials responded to the scene in Katonah, New York following a call about a suspicious package. Technicians from the Westchester County Police Department, where Soros has a home, detonated the device.

''We are conducting an investigation at and around a residence in Bedford, NY. There is no threat to public safety, and we have no further comment at this time.— FBI New York (@NewYorkFBI) October 23, 2018''

Soros is a billionaire and former hedge fund manager. He now focuses on political and philanthropic projects around the world. He has given prodigiously to organizations working on immigration, criminal justice, electoral politics, education, and human rights. Soros, who has spent billions of dollars for his causes, opposes the role of "big money" in politics. The explosive device was first discovered by a Soros employee at the home, the New York Times reported. After opening the box, the employee took the box to a wooded area and alerted police, according to a police statement. An anonymous law enforcement official told the Times that the FBI and the ATF are now managing the investigation.

Soros prominently entered the American political sphere during the 2004 presidential campaign. He spent millions of dollars opposing President George W. Bush, believing he posed an existential threat to democracy. Soros considered Bush’s defeat "a matter of life and death." Prior to the 2016 elections, Soros penned an article urging Americans to "resist the siren song of the likes of Donald Trump and Ted Cruz."Soros has long been the subject of numerous unfounded conspiracy theories and accusations. Most recently, some, including Rep. Matt Gaetz (R., Fla.), accused him of funding the caravan of Latin American migrants headed towards the United States. Both Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck called him a "puppetmaster" of the Obama administration. Alex Jones, the host of Infowars, believes Soros "is about to overthrow" the United States. Tomi Lahren congratulated Soros for Colin Kaepernick’s decision to kneel.

Later Monday night, news broke that two men had broken into and stolen equipment from the offices of House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s (R., Calif.). Jim Geraghty at National Review condemned violence, irrespective of the perpetrator’s politics. "There is one effective solution to political violence," he wrote. "Treat it like violence– that is, investigate, identify, arrest, prosecute, and incarcerate."

Eric Holder says call to 'kick' Republicans was a metaphor

Former Attorney General Eric Holder said Tuesday that when he told Democrats to “kick” Republicans earlier this month, he wasn’t advocating violence, but was using “kick” metaphorically to mean “oppose.” “Well, I mean, what I was saying was really a metaphor for the notion that people who try to undermine our democracy should be opposed, and we, as Democrats, should be tough in that opposition,” Holder said on CNN Tuesday evening. “I wasn't advocating violence, obviously.”

Earlier in October, Holder changed former first lady Michelle Obama’s motto, “When they go low, we go high,” to, “When they go low, we kick them.” Holder said he did not regret making those comments. In addition to claiming he wasn’t advocating for violence, Holder said he does not agree with those who call for politicians to be publicly confronted. “Now, I am not one, however, who thinks that politicians should be confronted in restaurants or at their homes. I disagree vehemently with what Ted Cruz has said, but I wouldn't approach him in a restaurant. Let him have dinner, you know, with his family and have a civil debate with him in another context,” Holder said, referencing when Cruz was run out of a restaurant by protesters for his support of now-Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation.

Rep. Maxine Waters, D-Calif., said over the summer that Democrats should continue to confront Republicans and members of the Trump administration in public places, like restaurants, and make it known that they are not welcome.

New polling nightmare: Trump supporters 'won't say it out loud'

The maligned polling industry is running into a new problem after blowing the 2016 presidential election: President Trump's supporters are keeping their feelings to themselves.

At Rasmussen Reports, which was the most accurate 2016 pollster, questions on Trump often see a spike in those who check "don't know." Francis Coombs, Rasmussen managing editor, said, "In most surveys, you generally get 4 or 5 percent who say they are undecided, but if you ask about a controversial issue, particularly one involving Trump, that figure often jumps to the high teens — 17 percent or 18 percent. That tells me that a lot of those people agree with the president but just aren't going to say it out loud." Jim McLaughlin of McLaughlin & Associates added that live interviews can lower that rate. "I think, for the most part, if you sample and screen properly, people do not lie to you. Yes, there are some 'no opinion' folks on Trump that probably do actually like him, but I just don't think there are too many of them," he said.

He and Democratic pollster John Zogby said the biggest problem in polling is that surveys still include too many Democrats. McLaughlin told Secrets, "I have to be honest, not quite sure exactly why these media polls are under-sampling Republicans so badly. On election day in November of 16, party affiliation was 36 percent Democrat/33 percent Republican, I have no idea why some of the media polls are so bad. Is it because they are talking to adults, not likely voters or is it just flat out bias? Some of these polls have less than a quarter Republican when it should be about one-third."

Citing a new CBS poll that included just 24 percent Republicans, Zogby told us, "That is just not America as I know it." Zogby, based in Utica, N.Y., said he doesn't believe pollsters are purposefully influencing their work. "I don't think it is purposeful, I think it is functional. Years ago, the head of a prominent polling operation told me that they use out of work actors to do the polls. That is a far different voice, inflection, or attitude than an Iowan (or Utican, for that matter). Others just do not take party ID all that seriously," he said.

Jorge Ramos Defends Migrant Caravan on Fox News: ‘There’s No Invasion Here’

Fox News on Monday hyped an interview with open borders advocate and Univision anchor Jorge Ramos, in which he lectured concerned Americans about a 7,000-strong migrant caravan headed to the United States-Mexico border.

During an interview with Fox News‘s Martha MacCallum, Ramos admitted that previously deported illegal aliens and criminals were among the migrant caravan headed to the southern border while lecturing Americans not to be concerned about the migration.

“Yes, I’ve talked to some of them who have been deported … some of them, yes, have been deported,” Ramos said, going on: The vast majority of these people are not criminals. They’re not terrorists. And they’re not even immigrants. They’re refugees. And as a nation in the United States, we have to choose what kind of nation we are and treat them with respect. We cannot pre-judge them. We cannot say all of them are criminals … that is not true. So what we have to do is listen to them, hear their cases, and if they deserve political asylum, then grant it to them. Ramos’s claim that the migrants who are a part of the caravan are “refugees” is counter to what the migrants, themselves, have told the media. Although often described as asylum-seekers, the migrants admit that they are economic migrants who are looking for jobs. Ramos said it is “not true” that the migrant caravan is invading the U.S., despite concerns from American citizens: Despite the optics, I know that if you are in the United States and you are watching this you might think ‘Oh, we’re going to be invaded.’ That is not true. There is no invasion here. We’re talking about 7,000 right now, maybe a few thousand more that are trying to cross the border between Mexico and Guatemala. [Emphasis added]

Greek former minister detained over alleged defense procurements kickbacks

Greek prosecutors have ordered the pre-trial detention of a former Socialist minister accused of accepting kickbacks from arms manufacturers in defense procurements, judicial sources said. Yannos Papantoniou is alleged to have received 2.8 million Swiss francs for the upgrade of six frigates in 2003 while defense minister. Papantoniou has denied any wrongdoing. Papantoniou served in the administration of Socialist PASOK as finance minister from 1994 to 2001, when Greece joined the euro, and defense minister from 2001 to 2004. Greek prosecutors late on Tuesday ordered the detention of Papantoniou and his wife as they considered them a flight risk, the sources said.
