Saudi Crown Prince Denounces Khashoggi Murder As "Heinous Crime"

Update: Appearing alongside the Crown Prince of Bahrain and Prime Minister of Lebanon (who, ironically, the Saudis once kidnapped), MbS briefly addressed the killing of Jamal Khashoggi, calling it a "heinous crime that cannot be justified", before focusing on his economic plans for the kingdom during his first public appearance since the diplomatic crisis sparked by Khashoggi's killing began

Hours after he reportedly spoke with Turkey's Erdogan during a brief phone call (their firs since Khashoggi's death), the Crown Prince said some had used the "painful" episode to drive a wedge between Turkey and KSA, the Financial Times reported. But he assured the crowd that this wouldn't be possible.

Asked about the Khashoggi killing, MbS reiterated that the perpetrators would face serious legal consequences, and that all legal measures were being taken to hold them to account.

"The crime was really painful to all Saudis," he said, according to Bloomberg. "We will present the perpetrators to the court."

Contrary to reports that the poor relationship between MbS and Erdogan had helped inflame the crisis, the Crown Prince defended KSA's relationship with Turkey, praised Erdogan and said that the diplomatic and economic relationships between the two countries would remain strong.

"They will not be able to do so as long as there is a King Salman, a Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and a president in Turkey called Erdogan," he said while speaking on a panel at the Future Investment Initiative conference in Riyadh.

The Crown Prince's comments represent the most forceful repudiation of Khashoggi's killing since the country's energy minister decried Khashoggi's death as "abhorrent" during the opening day of the initiative.

After his brief remarks about the Khashoggi scandal, MbS turned to the subject of the Saudi economy, discussing his Vision 2030 mega-projects, which elicited several rounds of applause from the mostly Saudi audience. Notably, MbS included Qatar on a list of Arab countries that would benefit from Saudi Arabia's economic initiatives. He ended his talk by declaring that he plans to make the Middle East a "world leader" before closing with a little lighthearted humor about last year's kidnapping of Saad Hariri.

‘Faith leaders’ to bless abortion clinic: ‘Accessing and providing abortions…are godly decisions’

“Faith leaders” will be gathering next month for a “clinic blessing” — a blessing for an abortion clinic, that is — in Columbus, Ohio.

“Anti-abortion advocates do not have the monopoly on faith or God,” the notice from Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio reads. “Many faith leaders and people of faith hold that accessing and providing abortions are good and godly decisions.”

The title of the notice? “Holy Ground: Blessing the Sacred Space of Decision.”

Also slated to attend the Nov. 9 “interfaith gathering” at the East Columbus Surgical Center is the Ohio Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice.

What’s on tap?

“During this clinic blessing, participants will gather with local faith leaders and guests to ask for God’s blessing upon Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio’s East Columbus Surgical facility, the abortion providers and staff, and all those who pass through the center,” the notice adds.

The event also will feature interfaith blessings, prayers, and testimonies about receiving and providing abortion care, the notice also says, emphasizing that the “clinic blessing will create space for progressive voices of faith to speak boldly in support of comprehensive reproductive health care, especially abortion.”

Oh, yeah — there’s a reception afterward. Registration and photo IDs are required.

Has this kind of thing happened before?

Abortion clinic blessings have happened in the past — and at least once before in Ohio.

Three years ago this month, 15 Christian ministers and rabbis gathered outside the Preterm clinic in Cleveland to bless the abortion facility, which may have been the first event of its kind in Ohio.

“Bless this building. May its walls stand strong against the onslaught of shame thrown at it,” said the Very Rev. Tracey Lind of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. “May it be a beacon of hope for those who need its services.”

In January 2017, more than 20 faith leaders blessed a Planned Parenthood facility in Washington, D.C. “This confirms the sacredness of the work we do,” Laura Meyers, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington, said regarding the ceremony.

Well-known pro-choice proponent Dr. Willie Parker added, “I’ve been a Christian longer than I’ve been an abortion provider. Women have been made to think that this [clinic] is some evil place, where God is not,” according to DCist, which noted his observation that people often respond to abortion by “cursing [women] for making sacred decisions. Our answer to the curse is to bless.”

"Shouting Match" Breaks Out Over Migrant Caravan As Trump Admin Debates Response

The Trump administration is still deciding how it will respond if a Central American migrant caravan arrives at the sourthern US border, despite President Trump's threats to deploy the military and declare a state of emergency, reports AP via CNBC. Trump has also threatened to retract aid from the caravan participants' countries of origin.

Top immigration officials and close Trump advisers are still evaluating the options in closed-door meetings that have gotten increasingly heated in the past week, including one that turned into a shouting match as the caravan of about 7,000 people pushes north, according to administration officials and others with knowledge of the issue. They spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak publicly on the topic. -CNBC

Some of Trump's inner circle, such as Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen have advocated for a more diplomatic approach - leveraging relationships with Mexico, Honduras, El Salvador and the United Nations to halt the group's advance.

Others have advocated for more immediate options - including declaring a state of emergency in order to provide the administration with a wide range of options over how to manage the caravan, including rescinding aid and forcing arriving families to choose months in detention with their children or releasing them into government shelters until a relative or guardian can take them.

President Trump has advocated for much of the latter approach - calling the caravan a national emergency, threatening to deploy troops, and pulling aid.

"They're not coming in. We're going to do whatever we have to, they're not coming in," Trump said on Tuesday.

Charlie Kirk, Turning Point’s 25-year-old founder and president, interviewed Trump in March as part of the “Generation Next” forum, a day’s worth of programming in the Eisenhower Office Building for young conservative leaders.

And in May, the president tweeted his approval of the group’s 29-year-old Director of Communications Candace Owens.
