Scarlett Johansson ‘vetoed Saudi crown prince funding of war journalist biopic’

Saudi Arabia’s crown prince wanted to fund a Hollywood biopic of US war photojournalist Lynsey Addario, but the money was rejected by Scarlett Johansson, who will star in it.

“Scarlett Johansson said absolutely not. She said, ‘This guy is perpetuating the war in Yemen. He has women in prison,'” Addario told New York Times’s Nicholas Kristof on Tuesday. “This was before the killing of Khashoggi.”

Crown prince Muhammad bin Salman stands accused of ordering the killing of his critic, self-exiled journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Saudi consulate in Istanbul. After weeks of denying any knowledge about Khashoggi’s fate, Riyadh finally acknowledged that he indeed was killed in what was framed as an unauthorized operation of the Saudi intelligence gone wrong.

Addario, 44, who covered conflicts from Afghanistan and Libya to DRC and Haiti, said the funding offer was apparently part of the prince’s PR campaign in the West. MbS, as he is often called, visited several nations last year to sign lucrative arms contracts and meet leading Western businessmen and celebrities.

At the time he was depicted in the mainstream media as a Saudi progressive, who would modernize the country in unprecedented ways. The fawning coverage was not undermined by the fact that Saudi Arabia had been waging a bloody war in Yemen for two years, causing thousands of civilian deaths and plunging the nation into the worst humanitarian disaster.

“I didn’t meet with him personally. But my sense is that he probably — my movie got folded into this huge charm campaign,” Addario said. “And that fact that he wanted to show the West that he was into Hollywood, he was into all the great things of the West. Do I want him associated with this movie? Obviously not. And thank God he’s not.”

Google abandons Berlin base after two years of resistance

Campaigners in a bohemian district of Berlin are celebrating after the internet giant Google abandoned strongly opposed plans to open a large campus there. The US firm had planned to set up an incubator for startup companies in Kreuzberg, one of the older districts in the west of the capital.

But the company’s German spokesman Ralf Bremer announced on Wednesday that the 3,000 square-metre (3,590 square-yard) space – planned to host offices, cafes and communal work areas – would instead go to two local humanitarian associations.

Bremer did not say if local resistance to the plans over the past two years had played a part in the change of heart, although he had told the Berliner Zeitung newspaper that Google does not allow protests to dictate its actions.

“The struggle pays off,” tweeted GloReiche Nachbarschaft, one of the groups opposed to the Kreuzberg campus plan and part of the “Fuck off Google” campaign.

Some campaigners objected to what they described as Google’s “evil” corporate practices, such as tax evasion and the unethical use of personal data. Some opposed the gentrification of the district, which might price many people out of the area.

A recent study carried out by the Knight Fox consultancy concluded that property prices were rising faster in Berlin than anywhere else in the world; they jumped 20.5% between 2016 and 2017. In Kreuzberg over the same period, the rise was 71%.

Kreuzberg, which straddled the Berlin wall that divided East and West Berlin during the cold war, has traditionally been a bastion of the city’s underground and radical culture.

Democrats Schumer, Pelosi say Trump has condoned violence

1 MIN READ

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Democratic leaders in Congress said on Wednesday that President Donald Trump’s call for unity after suspicious packages were sent to leading Democratic figures “ring hollow” because of his past statements that condone acts of violence.

“Time and time again, the president has condoned physical violence and divided Americans with his words and his actions,” Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and House of Representatives top Democrat Nancy Pelosi said in a statement.

They cited the Republican president’s “support for the congressman who body-slammed a reporter, the neo-Nazis who killed a young woman in Charlottesville, his supporters at rallies who get violent with protesters, dictators around the world who murder their own citizens, and referring to the free press as the enemy of the people.”

White supremacists arrested on Charlottesville riot charges

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES — Oct 24, 2018, 4:22 PM ET

The leader of a Southern California white supremacist group and two other members were arrested on charges of inciting a deadly riot in Charlottesville, Virginia, last year, prosecutors said Wednesday.

The arrests come weeks after other group members were indicted in Virginia on similar charges.

Rise Above Movement leader Robert Rundo was arrested Sunday at Los Angeles International Airport and was denied bail in Los Angeles federal court on Wednesday, U.S. Attorney's office spokesman Thom Mrozek said.

Two others, Robert Boman and Tyler Laube, were arrested Wednesday morning and Aaron Eason remains at large, Mrozek said. All four are charged with traveling to incite or participate in riots. Attorney information for the defendants could not immediately be found.

The men allegedly took actions with the "intent to incite, organize, promote, encourage, participate in, or carry on riots" last year in Charlottesville and in the California cities of Huntington Beach, Berkeley and San Bernardino, according to a complaint from the U.S. Attorney's office.

"RAM members violently attacked and assaulted counter-protesters at each of these events," the complaint said.

Prosecutors have described the Rise Above Movement as a militant white supremacist group that espouses anti-Semitic and other racist views and meets regularly to train in boxing and other fighting techniques.

The latest arrests come just weeks after the indictments of four other California members of RAM for allegedly inciting the Virginia riot.

In August 2017, they made their way to the "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville with their hands taped, "ready to do street battle," U.S. Attorney Thomas Cullen said at a press conference announcing the charges earlier this month.

Hundreds of white nationalists descended on Charlottesville in part to protest the planned removal of a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee.

Clashes erupted Aug. 11 as a crowd of white nationalists marching through the University of Virginia campus carrying torches and chanting racist slogans encountered a small group of counter-protesters.

The next day, more violence broke out between counter-protesters and attendees of the "Unite the Right" rally, which was believed to be the largest gathering of white nationalists in at least a decade. Street fighting exploded before the scheduled event could begin and went on for nearly an hour in view of police until authorities forced the crowd to disperse.

After authorities forced the rally to disband Aug. 12, Heather Heyer, 32, was killed when a car plowed into a crowd of counter-protesters.

The death toll rose to three when a state police helicopter that had been monitoring the event crashed, killing two troopers.

“Elaborately Planned” Caravan Brings Human Traffickers & Violent Gangbangers to Guatemala

OCTOBER 24, 2018

The migrant caravan marching northbound through Central America is an “elaborately planned” movement that’s benefiting human smugglers and bringing disturbing numbers of violent gang members and other criminal elements through Guatemala, according to government sources in the capital city. “MS-13 gang members have been detained and coyotes (human smugglers) are joining the march with clients who pay to get smuggled into the United States,” a Guatemalan official told Judicial Watch. People from Asian countries waiting to get smuggled into the U.S. through Central America are also integrating with poor Hondurans in the caravan, a high-level Guatemalan government source confirmed. Among them are nationals of Bangladesh, a south Asian Islamic country that’s well known as a recruiting ground for terrorist groups such as ISIS and Al-Qaeda Indian Subcontinent (AQIS). “There are lots of dirty businesses associated with this,” Guatemalan authorities told Judicial Watch. “There’s lots of human trafficking.”….
