Biden: Trump ‘More Like George Wallace Than George Washington’

Tuesday at a campaign event near Orlando, former Vice President Joe Biden compared President Donald Trump to segregationist and former Democratic Party governor of Alabama George Wallace.

Biden said, “No president has ever led by fear. Not Lincoln. Not Roosevelt. Not Kennedy. Not Reagan. This president is more like George Wallace than George Washington.”

He added, “Democrats have to choose hope over fear, unity over division. We have to choose our allies over our enemies. We have to choose truth over lies. We have to choose a brighter future for Americans over this desperate grip of the darkest elements of our past in our society.”

CNN’s Jim Acosta ‘Asks’ Trump: ‘What You Really Mean Is That You’re a White Nationalist

President Donald Trump defined nationalism for CNN reporter Jim Acosta in the White House Tuesday, saying that he’s “so proud of our country.”

“Mr. President, just to follow up on your comments about being a nationalist–there is a concern that you are sending coded language or a dog whistle to some Americans out there that what you really mean is that you’re a white nationalist?” Jim Acosta asked in the Oval Office.

NBC’s Peter Alexander: Trump Nationalism Not Just Racist but Xenophobic

Tuesday on MSNBC, NBC News White House correspondent Peter Alexander said President Donald Trump calling himself a “nationalist” was “not just racial” but also has “xenophobic” undertones.

Kasie Hunt asked, “Peter, can I ask you also about his using the word nationalist, saying, you know, out loud, I am a nationalist? How does the president kind of conceive of that term? Because it doesn’t, in many ways, have racial undertones.”

Alexander said, “Yeah, it definitely does. I mean, undertones that are not just racial but xenophobic. This is something that the president has shied away from in the past. Obviously nationalism was a phrase that Steve Bannon obviously embraced over the course of the campaign and a lot of the president’s opponents tried to pin this idea on him, that he was someone that was putting sort of America first but not in a good way, in ways he was trying to put cultural identities of Americans ahead of the identity of other foreigners, this sort of xenophobic idea.”

He added, “It gets the idea of what those people in some of these red parts of the country have embraced, this idea of us versus them. The president is clearly siding with the U.S. in the eyes of the people that surround him at these rallies.”
