Justice Department, EPA, State of Mississippi Reach Nationwide Settlement with Chevron U.S.A. Inc. to Address Chemical Accident Prevention Violations

The U.S. Department of Justice, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) announced a national settlement with Chevron U.S.A. Inc. (Chevron) that requires safety improvements at all of its petroleum refineries across the United States, resolving claims that the company violated provisions of the Clean Air Act aimed at preventing accidental releases of hazardous chemicals that can have serious consequences for public health and the environment.

‘International terrorism’ funded through US ‘food stamps’ program – report

A new report from an American think tank claims government food assistance dollars have been used to fund terrorism, in addition to garden-variety domestic fraud. The scams are said to have been in place for over two decades.

The document, compiled by Government Accountability Institute (GAI) calls out the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) – “food stamps” – for failing to investigate illegal benefits trafficking. The paper goes on to state that lax enforcement has led to billions of dollars diverted over the last 25 years, some of it to terrorist hotbeds such as Yemen and Somalia.

The report illuminates several specific instances in which SNAP dollars provided material support to terrorists. Often, the offenders used “hawalas,” which are informal international money transfer networks frequently employed by Muslim immigrants to send funds home from Western countries. According to the US government, the relative anonymity of these networks makes them ideal for money laundering…..

In Major Concession, Trump Will Allow Iran To Remain Connected To SWIFT

In a stark reversal from its position just days earlier, the Trump administration is expected to allow Iran to remain connected to the SWIFT banking system the Washington Examiner reports, in what amounts to a major concession to European allies who have been pressuring senior U.S. officials to keep this key lifeline to the Islamic Republic open.

As recently as this weekend, Reuters reported that in order to further isolate Iran from the global financial community, Treasury Secretary Mnuchin said that the U.S. Treasury was in negotiations with the Belgian-based financial messaging service SWIFT which intermediates the bulk of the world’s cross-border dollar-denominated transactions, on disconnecting Iran from the network. Washington has been pressuring SWIFT to cut Iran from the system as it did in 2012 before the nuclear deal.

The latest reversal comes as a result of 'ongoing talks between top U.S. officials and European allies "who have been pressuring the Trump administration to take a softer line on Tehran" ahead of the Nov. 4 implementation of new sanctions on Iran.

The unexpected move has been met with "frustration" by Iran hawks both on Capitol Hill and elsewhere who have argued that SWIFT continues to provide Iran with a critical financial lifeline which it is using to fund terrorist operations across the region despite its ailing economy. Yet despite opposition from the "hawks", Iran will remain connected to the SWIFT system

As reported previously, Trump has been under pressure for months from European allies to keep Iran connected to SWIFT, despite fierce opposition to the move among some inside the administration and many legislative allies on Capitol Hill….

An hour after New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced on live television that a “device” mailed to his Manhattan office was “being handled,” police declared his office safe Wednesday because the package was only a letter and a USB flash drive.

“The earlier suspicious package at Governor Cuomo’s office in midtown has been cleared by NYPD personnel. It was unrelated. And there was no device of any kind,” New York City Police Department spokesperson J. Peter Donald wrote on Twitter Wednesday.

Cuomo, a Democrat, spoke about the package on television while at a press conference on the bombs mailed to CNN and national figures including Bill and Hillary Clinton.

“A device has been sent to my office in Manhattan, which we were just informed about. And that device … has been identified and is being handled as we speak,” he said, according to Syracuse.com.

NYPD declared the package harmless “within and hour,” reported The Rochester Democrat & Chronicle.

“A preliminary investigation on the package at Governor Cuomo’s office shows it is computer files on the hate group, The Proud Boys, who recently appeared in New York,” Cuomo spokesman Rich Azzopardi said according to The Democrat & Chronicle.

Ex-Facebook security chief calls out Tim Cook and Apple's practices in China

Former Facebook chief security officer Alex Stamos called out Apple over its actions to limit access to apps in China.

"We don't want the media to create an incentive structure that ignores treating Chinese citizens as less-deserving of privacy protections because a CEO is willing to bad-mouth the business model of their primary competitor, who uses advertising to subsidize cheaper devices," Stamos said in a series of tweets responding to recent comments made by Apple CEO Tim Cook.

Cook spoke about privacy regulations at a keynote speech during the International Conference of Data Protection and Privacy Commissioners (ICDPPC) conference in Brussels on Wednesday. He called out social media companies for abusing user privacy to create algorithms to "serve up increasingly extreme content, pounding our harmless preferences into hardened convictions."

Though Stamos said he agreed with "almost everything" Cook said, in a series of tweets he called out Apple for blocking the ability to download VPN and encrypted messaging apps in China, which could provide ways to connect to the internet and send messages privately and without surveillance.

A NEW CLIMATE CHANGE LAWSUIT TAKES AIM AT EXXONMOBIL

New York is suing oil giant ExxonMobil for providing “false and misleading assurances” to shareholders and hiding the extent of its financial exposure to laws aimed at curbing greenhouse gas emissions

New York is suing the oil giant ExxonMobil in a lawsuit that claims the company engaged in a “longstanding fraudulent scheme” to downplay the risks posed to its business by climate change regulations.

The legal action, launched by New York state attorney general Barbara Underwood, alleges that ExxonMobil deceived its investors by hiding the true extent of its financial exposure to laws aimed at curbing greenhouse gas emissions.

Exxon provided “false and misleading assurances” to shareholders that it had factored in climate regulations and that its vast reserves of oil and gas weren’t at major risk of being left as stranded assets, New York’s lawsuit claims.

Senior executives, including former chief executive Rex Tillerson, who was briefly US secretary of state in the Trump administration before being abruptly fired earlier this year, took part in this facade, the lawsuit states.
