There are no coincidences. Critical thinking needed here. What/who is advantaged/disadvantaged by blinding these billions of dollars of instruments?

Did they discover something that was unacceptable to the public? To the scientific community?

I'm not sure. In safe mode, they're turned away from the sun, yet the solar panels stay oriented to maintain battery power. If they're pointed away from the sun, are they pointed back at earth now? We know the resolving potential of Hubble and Kepler optically, what could Chandra be looking for on earth in other spectrums?

Or (tin foil hat time), has someone's comms been blinded from communicating from someone/something "out there"?
