The Masons at the lower levels are a good old buddy club with some silly rituals. But at the higher levels the stuff gets pretty sinister. But by then lots of people have been sucked in and they don't realize what's going on because it unfolds incrementally.

Slave garden. I can see how someone might interpret it as in NK is breeding slaves. But I think you could all interpret in a broader context with the elites regarding everyone else as no better than slaves and letting them have their little gardens–their jobs, their lives, etc., but just making sure that they didn't get into control. Keep them down, kill them, keep the wars going, lie to them, destroy their food, tax them dry, just to make sure they stay in their place.
I read that one of the recent soldiers who defected was infested with worms and parasites, and indication of the overall quality of life in NK.
