Drug companies will take 2 really old medications- such as in Symbicort- and combine them in 1 inhaler. Now you have to pay $350 for one inhaler instead of $40 for 2 separate generic ones.
They also take drugs that are going off patent and change the dosing. (ex) Paxil 20mg, about 6 months before the generic, they stop making it, causing worldwide shortage ON PURPOSE. Then replace it with surprise Paxil XR 22.5mg.
In the 6 mos. where 20mg isn't available, drs switch everyone else to the very expensive XR brand, then when generic comes out, they just stay on the expensive one.
Or they'll change one minute little thing about a drug. (ex) Prilosec was about to go generic. So the company created NEXIUM. Prilosec is omeprazole, a racemic mixture of both the left and right isomers. (for chemfags) Nexium is ESOmeprazole, which is just the LEFT isomer only. Nothing new at all. But they get 12 more years on patent with their $500/month 30 day supply.
