JUST IN: Grand Jury Indicts Cop Who Fatally Shot Unarmed Man
HOUSTON, TX — A Harris County grand jury indicted a former sheriff’s deputy Thursday for a fatal shooting in March, District Attorney Kim Ogg announced.
The indictment charges fired Harris County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Cameron Brewer with Aggravated Assault by a Public Servant for causing the death of Danny Thomas, an unarmed civilian.
KPRC reported: In the March 22 shooting, Thomas was wearing his pants around his ankles, talking to himself and hitting vehicles with his hands as they passed by.
The deputy stopped his vehicle and advised Thomas to stop. He attempted to use other verbal commands, but Thomas approached the deputy in an aggressive manner, Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said.
The deputy shot Thomas one time in the chest, Gonzalez said. Thomas was pronounced dead at Houston Northwest Medical Center.
The first-degree felony carries a penalty of up to life in prison.
“Our democracy depends on the public’s trusting that police are here to protect us,” Ogg said. “When they exceed their lawful authority, our community holds them accountable, and that’s exactly what this grand jury of ordinary citizens did.”
Brewer was fired by the Sheriff’s Office in April for not adhering to the Sheriff’s Office Use of Force Policy.

Prankster sent mayor penis-shaped candy. Cops were asked to investigate.
Someone thought it was a good idea to send the mayor of Hamilton Township a bag of penis-shaped candy as a prank.
Mayor Kelly Yeade received a package of penis-shaped candy, sent through the website Dysfunctional Veterans, last week.
The group's website, and its accompanying Facebook page, describe its community as "a brotherhood and sisterhood of veterans rooted in sarcasms and the things that remind us we are not alone."
The Dysfunctional Veterans website sells a variety of items such as T-shirts, hats, mugs, flags, patches, and pranks.
The website offers "Eat a bag of d—-" under its prank gift category with the following description:
"Don't you wish you could just tell that special idiot you know to eat a bag of d—-? Wouldn't it be even better if you could actually give them a bag of d—- to eat? Now you can!"
Yaede's office received the candy last week, when the mayor wasn't in the office.
"My staff intercepted it and then asked the Hamilton Township police department to find out the origin of the package," Yaede told NJ Advance Media. "When I was alerted to it I didn't give it a second thought, and laughed it off."
Dysfunctional Veterans made a post on their Facebook page about the police investigation including a screen shot of an email they received from the Hamilton Township Police Department, requesting to speak to someone at the company about the purchase.
Yaede then put an end to the brief investigation and said that there is no active investigation looking into who sent the candy.
"It was a prank and that's all I took it was," Yaede said.

Some of the suspected mail bombs that were sent to Democratic officials and others in recent days were not capable of exploding, according to a new report on Thursday that cited several law enforcement officials.
"Some of the 10 suspected mail bombs addressed to high-profile Democrats and others over the last few days were flawed and not capable of exploding, while others have yet to be fully analyzed," NBC News reported, adding that the investigators noted: "In some cases, the flaws were substantial. In others, more subtle."

More suspicious packages found as investigators search for sender
"Suspicious packages" received at multiple locations this week "contain potentially destructive devices," the FBI said.
A package sent to actor Robert De Niro, a strong critic of President Trump, was removed Thursday morning from the scene where it was found, a source told CBS News.
Other intended recipients of suspicious packages included former President Obama, former Vice President Joe Biden, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former CIA Director John Brennan, former Attorney General Eric Holder and liberal philanthropist George Soros.
All packages as of Wednesday had a return address of "Debbie Wasserman Shultz," the FBI said.
The package addressed to Brennan was sent to CNN's offices in New York City. It contained what appeared to be a live explosive device, and an envelope containing white powder.
A suspicious package addressed to Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters was intercepted at a House mail facility, two sources told CBS News. Later Wednesday night, the LAPD said it was investigating another package found at a mail facility near Downtown Los Angeles.
At least 10 suspicious packages were sent to prominent Democrats and critics of President Trump. The latest was addressed to actor Robert De Niro and found in lower Manhattan on Thursday morning.
Other apparent bombs were sent to former President Obama, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former Vice President Joe Biden and former CIA Director John Brennan. None of the devices have exploded, and nobody was hurt.
The FBI suspected the packages are linked and warned there could be more. In a speech Wednesday night, Mr. Trump called acts or threats of political violence "an attack on democracy itself."
But he tweeted Thursday morning that so-called "Fake News" is causing anger in our society and said, "Mainstream Media must clean up its act, FAST!"

Family of Lawrence teen killed in gas explosions plans to sue Columbia Gas
The family of an 18-year-old Lawrence student who was killed last month when a series of gas fires and explosions erupted in the Merrimack Valley intends to file a wrongful death lawsuit against Columbia Gas of Massachusetts, according to their attorney.
Lawyer Doug Sheff announced the planned litigation during a news conference Thursday morning as he stood next to a large photograph of Leonel Rondon in his law office. Rondon’s family did not attend.
Rondon, a student at Phoenix Charter Academy in Lawrence, died Sept. 13 after a chimney from a house that exploded toppled onto the vehicle he was sitting in at a friend’s house on Chickering Road….

Police arrested a man Wednesday who allegedly harassed a Republican campaign worker with racial slurs and threatened to assault him at an early voting station in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The police report states that officers arrived on the scene in response to a call that a black campaign worker was being threatened by a white man, identified as Jason Donald Wayne, 28.
“The victim approached the suspect, at which time the suspect began directing racial slurs towards the victim. The victim stated that the suspect threatened to assault him before lifting his shirt and displaying a handgun which was in a holster on the suspect’s belt,” a press release stated…. pic
The victim, identified as Derek Partee, claims three people approached him and called him a “black piece of shit,” according to a post he uploaded to Facebook.. pic
Partee said he first saw Wayne in the parking lot of the early voting location when he noticed the man filming and taking pictures of the polling location, local CBS affiliate WBTV reported.
Although Wayne threatened and harassed Partee, he told police the man did not attempt to remove the gun, which ended up being a BB gun, from its holster.
Wayne is being charged with going armed to the terror of the people, ethnic intimidation, communicating threats and disorderly conduct, according to the report. (RELATED: New York Times Publishes Trump Assassination Fantasy)
Partee is a former police detective from Long Island, New York, the release stated.
Police said they’ve identified two other individuals in relation to the incident, but the officers don’t plan to press charges.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department plans to conduct scheduled zone checks at all polling locations through the elections on Nov. 6.
