On the Origins of Memes by Means of Fringe Web Communities

Internet memes are increasingly used to sway and possibly manipulate public opinion

In this paper, we detect and measure the propagation of memes across multiple Web communities

/pol/ substantially influences the meme ecosystem with the number of memes it produces

These memes, often generated by fringe communities, are being “weaponized” and even becoming part of political and ideological propaganda

/pol/ and The_Donald are influential actors in the meme ecosystem, despite their modest size.

We find that /pol/ substantially influences the meme ecosystem by posting a large number of memes

/pol/ has the greatest number of memes posted, followed by Twitter and then Reddit.

/pol/ is the strongest source of influence for Reddit, The Donald, and Gab, but not for Twitter

/pol/ has the most total influence for both racist and non-racist memes, with the notable exception of Twitter, where Reddit has the most the influence.

/pol/ influences The_Donald more in terms of political memes

The Donald has by far the greatest influence for the number of memes posted on it.

Memes from this community spread very well to all of the other communities.

While /pol/ has a large total influence on the other communities, when normalized by its size, it has the smallest external influence

Most of the memes posted on /pol/ do not spread to other communities.

contrary to the total influence, /pol/ is the least influential when taking into account the number of memes posted.

While this might seem surprising, it actually yields a subtle, yet crucial aspect of /pol/’s role in the meme ecosystem: /pol/ (and 4chan in general) acts as an evolutionary microcosm for memes.

The constant production of new content results in a “survival of the fittest” scenario.

A staggering number of memes are posted on /pol/, but only the best actually make it out to other communities.

To the best of our knowledge, this is the first result quantifying this analogy to evolutionary pressure.

/pol/ is … the most influential disseminator of memes in terms of raw influence.

/pol/’s “famed” meme magic, i.e., the propensity to produce and heavily push memes, is thus the most likely explanation for /pol/’s influence on the Web in general.

Meme Magic: Ridicule

The best memes spread because they speak the truth, and the truth leads to freedom

Ridicule is a zero-sum game, destructive to one of the parties involved

Ridicule can tear down faster than the other side can rebuild

An indicator that a regime is ripe for a ridicule attack is when that regime passes laws and issues decrees to ban public insults against those holding political power.

Ridicule serves several purposes:

• Ridicule raises morale at home.

• Ridicule strips the enemy/adversary of his mystique and prestige.

• Ridicule erodes the enemy’s claim to justice.

• Ridicule eliminates the enemy’s image of invincibility.

• Directed properly at an enemy, ridicule can be a fate worse than death.

Ridicule is vital because:

• It sticks

• The target can’t refute it.

• It is almost impossible to repress, even if driven underground.

• It spreads on its own and multiplies naturally.

• It gets better with each re-telling.

• It boosts morale at home.

• Our enemy shows far greater intolerance to ridicule than we.

• Ridicule divides the enemy, damages its morale, and makes it less attractive to supporters and prospective recruits.

• The ridicule-armed warrior need not fix a physical sight on the target. Ridicule will find its own way to the targeted individual. To the enemy, being ridiculed means losing respect. It means losing influence. It means losing followers and repelling potential new backers.

• To the enemy, ridicule can be worse than death. At least many enemies find death to be a supernatural martyrdom. Ridicule is much worse: destruction without martyrdom: A fate worse than death. And they have to live with it.
