European Union: Defaming The Prophet Muhammad Is Not Free Expression

The right to free expression does not protect defamation of the Muslim prophet Muhammad, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ruled Thursday.

Upholding a lower court’s ruling, the ECHR found that defaming Muhammad “goes beyond the permissible limits of an objective debate” and “could stir up prejudice and put at risk religious peace” and is therefore not protected expression, the court said in a press release. The case pertained to an Austrian woman – referred to as “Mrs. S.” in court documents – who held two seminars in 2009 on the subject of Islam, in which she accused Muhammad of pedophilia. She was fined 480 Euros, roughly $545, for “disparaging religious doctrines,” the Express Tribune reported.

Europe has long struggled with Islam’s ban on depictions of the prophet, a ban some adherents enforce with violence. Radicals murdered 12 people at the satirical french magazine Charlie Hebdo in 2015 for depicting and mocking the prophet in its pages. The attack sparked many news outlets to publish the “offending” cartoon in solidarity, a decision that could now be punishable in court with the ECHR’s ruling. The claim of pedophilia made by Mrs. S. in her seminar is not a fringe belief, as several traditional sources within Islam recount Muhammad being betrothed to a 6-year-old and consummating the marriage when she was 9-years-old. One of those sources is from a Hadith or “tradition” said to be written by the wife herself.

Muslim apologists defend Muhammad with the claim that such marriages were common at the time and that Islam requires marriage to be between consenting adults, implying the wife could have gone through puberty early.

NBC Sat On Information That Contradicted Gang Rape Claims Against Kavanaugh

3:59 PM 10/26/2018 | Media

Amber Athey | Media and Breaking News Editor

NBC News waited weeks to publish information contradicting allegations that Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh was involved in gang rape parties.

On September 26, 2018, Julie Swetnick claimed in a sworn affidavit that she attended multiple parties during which she witnessed Kavanaugh “drink excessively” and “engage in abusive and physically aggressive behavior toward girls.” Swetnick was represented by celebrity lawyer Michael Avenatti. (RELATED: Woman Repped By Avenatti Claims Kavanaugh Attended Gang Rape Parties)

Avenatti claimed at the time that he knew a second woman who could back up Swetnick’s allegations.

The second woman wrote in a declaration, “During the years 1981-82, I witnessed firsthand Brett Kavanaugh, together with others, ‘spike’ the ‘punch’ at house parties I attended with Quaaludes and/or grain alcohol. I understood this was being done for the purpose of making girls more likely to engage in sexual acts and less likely to say ‘No.'”

The second woman, however, contradicted those claims in a phone interview with NBC on September 30, just a few days before Avenatti published her declaration. (RELATED: Avenatti Accused Of ‘Twisting Words’ Of Kavanaugh Witness)

“I didn’t ever think it was Brett,” she told NBC.

She later texted NBC on October 4 after reviewing the declaration published by Avenatti, writing, “It is incorrect that I saw Brett spike the punch. I didn’t see anyone spike the punch … I was very clear with Michael Avenatti from day one.”

On October 5, the woman said she did not like that Avenatti had “twisted” her words.

Kavanaugh was not confirmed to the Supreme Court until October 6, days after NBC first spoke to the second woman on the phone.

NBC opted not to publish this contradictory information until October 26, despite the fact that they could have potentially saved Kavanaugh from days of grilling by Democratic lawmakers about the gang rape allegations.

McCaskill Releases Campaign Ad Saying She Is ‘Not One Of Those Crazy Democrats’

Missouri Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill released a campaign ad saying she’s “not one of those crazy Democrats,” just less than two weeks before the Nov. 6 midterm election.

McCaskill, who is in a tight race against Republican state Attorney General Josh Hawley, released a radio ad that has run throughout the week. In the ad, two men explain why they are going to vote for the incumbent Democratic senator over Hawley, saying that he spends too much time at the gym and buys too much wine “during work hours,” The Washington Free Beacon reported.

“Claire’s not one of those crazy Democrats. She works right in the middle and finds compromise,” one man says in the ad.

“I don’t always agree with Claire McCaskill. But she works hard, fighting against those tariffs, doing all those town halls,” the other man continues. “Claire’s not afraid to stand up against her own party.”

President Donald Trump won Missouri by nearly 19 points in the 2016 presidential election, and has campaigned for Hawley in the state. Hawley and Trump both criticized McCaskill for opposing Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh during his confirmation process amid unproven allegations of sexual assault. As of Friday, Real Clear Politics has the race listed as a “toss-up,” with Hawley leading by .02 percent.

UN Investigators Check Weapons Seized by US Navy Ship

26 Oct 2018

The Associated Press | By Lolita C. Baldor

ABOARD THE USS JASON DUNHAM, Persian Gulf — The huge pile of rusting AK-47 assault rifles is tucked into a corner below the deck of the USS Jason Dunham, serving as a grim reminder of how hard it is to catch weapons smugglers believed to be trafficking arms into Yemen.

On Thursday U.N. inspectors boarded the American guided-missile destroyer, to examine the more than 2,500 guns the crew seized in late August and determine if suspicions are true that the weapons originated in Iran.

U.S. officials have long accused Iran of smuggling arms across the waters to Yemen's Shiite Houthi rebels, who have held Yemen's capital, Sanaa, since September 2014. But they have only managed to seize a handful of weapons caches in recent years, underscoring the difficulties in tracking down arms smugglers working the vast waters around Yemen.

"It's one big traffic corridor," Vice Adm. Scott Stearney, commander of U.S. 5th Fleet, told reporters Thursday. "It's not blocked, and it's not just lines on a map that people don't penetrate."

Stearney declined to say if he thought Iran was responsible for the shipment, but he said the U.N. inspectors were experts on illicit weapons from Iran, Yemen and Somalia.

The USS Jason Dunham on patrol in the region noticed large bags being transferred from a dhow about 70 miles off the coast of Yemen and into a smaller skiff. A dhow is a traditional ship that commonly sails the waters of the Persian Gulf region. The Navy ship intercepted the skiff and, after talking to the crew on board, determined they were smuggling weapons.

The rifles, in bundles of four or five, were wrapped in plastic, then wrapped in Styrofoam and hidden in green burlap bags, according to Navy Cmdr. John Hamilton, commander of the Dunham…………………………

Koreas, UN Finish Removing Firearms from Border Village

26 Oct 2018

The Associated Press | By Hyung-jin Kim

SEOUL, South Korea — The rival Koreas and the U.S.-led U.N. Command finished removing firearms and troops from a jointly controlled area at a border village on Thursday, as part of agreements to reduce decades-long animosity on the Korean Peninsula.

South Korea separately announced that its troops found what it believes are Korean War remains in another front-line area where they have been clearing land mines with North Korean soldiers. The rival Koreas plan their first-ever joint searches for war dead there after their demining work is done.

Disarming the Joint Security Area at the border village of Panmunjom and the joint searches are among a package of deals the Koreas' defense ministers struck on the sidelines of their leaders' summit last month. Other steps include creating buffer zones along their land and sea boundaries and a no-fly zone above the border, as well as removing some of their front-line guard posts.

On Thursday, the Koreas and the U.N. Command completed a removal of weapons, ammunition and soldiers manning guard posts at Panmunjom's Joint Security Area, Seoul's Defense Ministry said in a statement. The three sides earlier finished removing mines from the village.

The three sides will jointly verify their disarmament work on Friday and Saturday. Under the September deals, the two Koreas are to let 35 "unarmed personnel" from each side guard the Joint Security Area and let tourists freely move around there…………………………
