Israel Strikes Around 80 Hamas Targets in Response to Overnight Shelling - IDF

The Israeli military said Saturday it had struck two arms workshops, five bases, a training camp, an entrance to an underground tunnel and an observation post among other Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip.

"In response to the actions of [the Palestinian movement] Hamas, dozens of fighter jets, attack helicopters and other aircraft of the Israel Defense Forces conducted powerful overnight strikes on around 80 Hamas targets across the Gaza Strip," the IDF said in a statement.

IDF said on Saturday they had started air raids against targets in the Gaza Strip in response to the recent shelling from the area. "In response to the rockets fired from #Gaza at #Israel over the last 2.5 hours, IDF fighter jets and attack helicopters have started striking terror targets in Gaza… More targets will be struck in Gaza," the IDF wrote on Twitter.

The IDF said late on Friday that up to 12 rockets had been fired from Gaza on its territory. Rocket alert was issued in the city of Sderot and the Sha'ar HaNegev area surrounding it, which are located near the Palestinian enclave's border.

The Israeli military subsequently wrote on Twitter that "8/14 rockets fired from Gaza were successfully intercepted by the soldiers operating the Iron Dome" air defense system.

Earlier on Saturday, the IDF said it had registered 30 rocket launches from Gaza in the course of the night.

Israeli warplanes conduct fresh airstrikes against blockaded Gaza Strip

Israeli warplanes have carried out fresh airstrikes against the besieged Gaza Strip, shortly after soldiers of the occupying regime shot dead several protesters from the impoverished enclave.

Israel military aircraft struck several locations in the Gaza Strip late on Friday, including one in the east of Rafah town and the other in the central parts of the sliver. No reports have yet been released about possible casualties due to the airstrikes.

The Israeli military claimed in a statement that the aerial aggression was in retaliation for 16 rockets fired against the southern parts of the occupied territories earlier in the day.

It added that Israel’s so-called Iron Dome managed to intercept at least 10 of the inbound rockets and the remaining six reportedly exploded in open areas and inflicted no damage or casualties. However, the incoming rockets triggered eight different sirens for hours across several settlements, prompting thousands of settlers to rush for bomb shelters.

Caravan Migrants Reject Nieto’s Offer to Stay in Mexico

Mexican authorities are offering migrants food, shelter, medical aid, schooling, and jobs but say they must turn themselves in and apply for refugee status inside the country.

Several thousand Central American migrants have turned down Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto's offer to stay in Mexico, saying that they are determined to get to the United States.

Earlier on Friday, Nieto offered the caravan migrants to register in Mexico and apply for refugee status. In return for agreeing to stay in Mexico's two southern states, Nieto offered shelter, medical attention, schooling and jobs, in what has been named the "You are at home plan."

However, the vast majority of migrants have denied the offer, voting against it in a show of hands in the town of Arriaga.

"Thank you!" they shouted. "No, we're heading north."

"Our goal is not to remain in Mexico," a 58-year old migrant from the caravan told reporters. "Our goal is to make it to the [US] We want passage, that's all."

According to Mexican authorities some 1,700 migrants decided to agree to the offer and apply for refugee status. However, earlier this week the caravan reportedly reached 7,500 people, while a second caravan of more than 1,000 migrants is currently following in their footsteps.

So far, Mexican authorities have allowed the migrants to travel across their territory on foot, but denied the migrants food, shelter or bathrooms, reserving these commodities to those who turn themselves in and register.

In the meantime, the US is preparing to defend the country's border against the wave of migrants, with the Pentagon sending 800 troops to reinforce a 2,000-strong National Guard crew already stationed at the border. Additionally, civilian groups have begun gathering at the border, willing to provide a helping hand against those who decide to cross the border illegally.

US President Trump has declared the caravan a "national emergency," with the Department of Homeland Security saying that migrants from the Middle East and criminal gang members are blending in among the Central Americans.
