With new concealed-carry law in place, Nashua educators wrestle with weapons policy
NASHUA — School officials are grappling with how to update the district’s policy on weapons in light of the state’s new concealed carry law.
“I think it is ridiculous that we are prohibited from saying that our schools should be gun-free zones,” said Heather Raymond, member of the Nashua Board of Education.
Last year, Gov. Chris Sununu signed SB12 into law, allowing concealed carry of firearms without a permit, meaning anyone who legally owns a gun can now carry it in a concealed fashion without a permit from a local police chief.
The new law also upholds the right for adults to carry guns on to school property, but leaves in place restrictions against letting students do the same.
Ray Guarino, another school board member, last week recommended a new amendment to the district’s weapons policy that would require school staff to notify law enforcement whenever an adult is on a school campus with a gun.
“Despite the fact that it is legal doesn’t matter. We can still call the police. The police do not have to arrest them,” said Guarino. “I think it is insane. It is insanity to let anybody on school property with a weapon.”
