Imposter with Nazi ancestry? Jewish leader quits over accusations he lied about heritage
A senior Jewish leader in a northern German community has stood down amid allegations that he may have lied about his heritage – and might not actually be Jewish at all.
Wolfgang Seibert, leader of the Schleswig-Holstein chapter of the Jewish Communities Association (JCA), has resigned “with immediate effect, to avert further damage,” according to the religious group.
Seibert, 71, has been a leader of the Jewish community in a town near Hamburg since 2003. His resignation follows a recent report by German news website Der Spiegel, which cited documents that questioned Seibert’s Jewish heritage.
He publicly identifies as a Reform Jew, however, family documents revealed that neither he, his parents, nor his grandparents were Jewish. Reports now show that Seibert was born to Christian Protestant parents in Frankfurt, and was baptized into the Christian faith when he was three-days old.
Der Spiegel also claims that the religious leader never converted to Judaism, and dubbed him a “scammer,” adding that he has a criminal record for multiple instances of fraud and embezzlement.
The German weekly publication also took aim at claims that Siebert’s grandparents survived Auschwitz – reporting that his paternal grandfather and father both actually fought for the Nazi regime in World War II.
It also hit back at Siebert’s claims that his grandmother Anna Katharina Schmidt survived the notorious concentration camp, reporting that Seibert’s grandmother was in fact the daughter of a Protestant.
In a statement released on Friday, Seibert’s lawyer said his client had “exaggerated” some of his personal accounts, Associated Press reports. He also said Seibert apologized to the community for causing any insult by his ‘exaggerations.’ His lawyer added that Seibert is “committed to the principles of Jewish faith” and hopes to regain the community’s trust.

Rouhani Hails EU Siding with Iran Against America as ‘Historic Victory’
President Hassan Rouhani said Saturday that the divisions between the U.S. and Europe over renewed sanctions on Iran were a “rare historical victory” for the Islamic republic.
“If this time last year, we had stated that America would stand against the great nation of Iran… and Europe would stand with Iran and against America, the overwhelming majority of us… would have said that this was pure optimism,” Rouhani told lawmakers in a televised address.
“The political victory of the great nation of Iran over the past months is a rare victory in history.”
EU countries have fiercely opposed the decision by U.S. President Donald Trump to abandon their landmark 2015 nuclear deal with Iran and reimpose sanctions — the last of which will return on November 5th.
Rouhani was addressing parliament for a special session to approve four new ministers covering the portfolios of economy, transport, labour, and industry.
He acknowledged Iranians were feeling the economic strain, saying: “All of us understand people are suffering and under pressure. People’s lives, in particular those on a fixed income, are very difficult.”
But he insisted there were sufficient reserves of basic commodities and foreign currency to weather the storm, even after a record-breaking plunge in the rial over the summer and imminent sanctions on its crucial oil industry.
“We cannot tell our people that because of America’s pressure, we cannot do anything. This answer is not acceptable. We cannot tell people that because there are problems with selling our oil, we are unable to manage the country,” he said.
He criticised foreign media reports that costs were soaring, despite Iran’s own central bank showing food and drink prices had risen 46.5 percent in the year to September.
“Foreign media lie to people of Iran and say that Iran is the most expensive country people live in,” Rouhani said.
Lawmakers later approved the four names put forward by Rouhani: Farhad Dejpasand as economy minister, Mohammad Eslami for transport, Reza Rahmani for industry and Mohammad Shariatmadari for labour.
The previous economy and labour ministers were impeached by parliament in August, while the other two resigned last week.

Israeli Forces Launch 87 Overnight Airstrikes Against Gaza Strip
The Israeli army carried out scores of air strikes across the besieged Gaza Strip in the early hours of Saturday, in the highest-intensity offensive on the coastal Palestinian territory since the summer.
The Israeli army launched at least 87 air strikes, Israeli news outlet Ynet reported, saying it was in response to some 34 rockets fired from the enclave into southern Israel.
Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the rockets, saying in a statement that they were in retaliation for the Israeli army’s killing of five Palestinian protesters on Friday.
“The resistance will not accept the equation imposed by the enemy on the basis of killing on their part and silence on our part,” the group said in a statement.
Following the exchanges, Islamic Jihad’s media office announced on Saturday morning that it had accepted an Egypt-mediated ceasefire with Israel.
Locals told Middle East Eye that one four-storey building in central Gaza City that was turned to rubble overnight had hosted charitable institutions and research centres.
Gaza’s Ministry of Health, meanwhile, said that air strikes had targeted the perimeter of the Indonesian Hospital in Beit Lahiya in the northern Gaza Strip, causing material damages to the building.
The ministry did not immediately report on Palestinian casualties or injuries from the air strikes. Israeli media said that six people had been minorly injured during the rocket attacks.
More than 200 Palestinians have been killed and at least 10,000 wounded by Israeli forces since the beginning of the Great March of Return on 30 March.
One Israeli soldier has been killed over the same period.
Thousands of Palestinian demonstrators have come out for 31 weeks to denounce the blockade of the Gaza Strip and call for the right of return of Palestinian refugees to the homes, from which they and their families were displaced during the establishment of the state of Israel.
The latest round of air strikes came as high-level Israeli officials have ramped up calls for a “strong blow” against Gaza in recent weeks, with Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman not excluding “a wide-scale confrontation”.
Israel maintains a crippling blockade of the Gaza Strip which critics say amounts to collective punishment of the impoverished enclave’s two million residents.
Egypt also upholds the siege, restricting movement in and out of Gaza on its border.

Now, a report from the UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) reveals that Israel has been working closely with Syrian rebels in the Golan Heights and have kept close contact over the past 18 months. The report was submitted to the UN Security Council at the beginning of the month.
The documents show that Israel has been doing more than simply treating wounded Syrian civilians in hospitals. This and a few past reports have described transfer of unspecified supplies from Israel to the Syrian rebels, and sightings of IDF soldiers meeting with the Syrian opposition east of the green zone, as well as incidents when Israeli soldiers opened up the fence to allow Syrians through who did not appear to be injured.
