You don't get to change the battleground when it's already been chosen eight years earlier. Your first battle has to be fought on a ground not of your choosing. if you win, therafter you can choose the battleground. If the current battleground is identity politics then that's the ground which has to be fought and taken. Once won, the possibility for change to a battlegound of ideas and policies becomes a possible venue for future battles.
