How the Hunt Brothers Cornered the Silver Market and Then Lost it All

 

Until his dying day in 2014, Nelson Bunker Hunt, who had once been the world’s wealthiest man, denied that he and his brother plotted to corner the global silver market.

 

Sure, back in 1980, Bunker, his younger brother Herbert, and other members of the Hunt clan owned roughly two-thirds of all the privately held silver on earth. But the historic stockpiling of bullion hadn’t been a ploy to manipulate the market, they and their sizable legal team would insist in the following years. Instead, it was a strategy to hedge against the voracious inflation of the 1970s—a monumental bet against the U.S. dollar

 

Whatever the motive, it was a bet that went historically sour. The debt-fueled boom and bust of the global silver market not only decimated the Hunt fortune, but threatened to take down the U.S. financial system.

 

The panic of “Silver Thursday” took place over 35 years ago, but it still raises questions about the nature of financial manipulation. While many view the Hunt brothers as members of a long succession of white collar crooks, from Charles Ponzi to Bernie Madoff, others see the endearingly eccentric Texans as the victims of overstepping regulators and vindictive insiders who couldn’t stand the thought of being played by a couple of southern yokels.

 

In either case, the story of the Hunt brothers just goes to show how difficult it can be to distinguish illegal market manipulation from the old fashioned wheeling and dealing that make our markets work.

U. Texas Admin and Faculty Donate Overwhelmingly to Democrats

 

EXCLUSIVE REPORT: 96.1 percent of University of Texas administrators, 93.5 percent of faculty donated to Dems

 

Campus Reform analyzed the 2017-2018 political donation records of employees at the University of Texas (UT), using publicly available records from the Federal Election Commission, in order to determine the political leanings of faculty and administrators at the college.

 

According to the Campus Reform analysis, 96.1 percent of all UT system administrators who donated to political candidates or causes gave a total of $36,852.20 to Democrat politicians or Democrat organizations, such as Texas Senate candidate Beto O’Rourke and New York congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

 

In total, UT employees donated $642,693.43 from 2017-2018. Of that amount, 94.7 percent went to Democrat politicians or Democrat organizations, while just 5.3 percent of the donations were made to Republican politicians or Republican organizations.

 

In total, 917 faculty members, specifically, donated a total of $481,853.56 to politicians or political organizations. They contributed 93.5 percent of the money to Democrat politicians or organizations, such as the Texas Democrat Party and End Citizens United. Just 6.5 percent of donations went to Republican politicians or Republican causes.

 

Of 140 UT administrators, 137 donated $36,852.20 to Democrat political candidates and politicians. Three UT administrators gave a total of $1,500 in donations to Republican politicians or organizations from 2017-2018.

'It's Safe to Say the Devil Lives in Him': ICE Snags Sex Trafficker and Other Perverts

 

As lefties across America demand that the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency be abolished, it is worth remembering that ICE often plays an integral role in nabbing sex trafficking victims and human smugglers. In conjunction with other federal agencies, ICE regularly prevents perverts from pimping out women and underage girls, as well as male victims, in this dark industry. This was evidenced yet again last Friday, October 19, 2018 after a Dallas-area man was sentenced to life in prison for operating an underage prostitution ring and subjecting his victims to harm, danger, and exploitation.

 

According to a press release sent out by ICE, "Allen Nash, 31, was convicted in April of the following charges: sex trafficking children; conspiracy to commit sex trafficking; sex trafficking through force, fraud or coercion; transporting a minor to engage in commercial sex acts; and illegally possessing ammunition after he forced two victims, aged 17 and 19, into the illicit sex trade in the fall of 2014.

 

Nash apparently targeted these girls by promising them "a better life," according to testimony. Instead, they were subjected to horror. "He joined forces with the owner of the 'Doll House' massage parlor, demanding the girls work day and night," according to the release.

America Can't Risk Surrendering Intellectual Property Supremacy

 

For over two centuries, America's unique emphasis on protecting intellectual property (IP) rights - patent, copyright, trademark and trade secrets - largely explains how we became and remain the most inventive, creative and prosperous nation in history.

 

Our Founding Fathers considered IP rights so important that they deliberately protected them in the text of the Constitution. Article I, Section 8 reads, "The Congress shall have the Power … [t]o promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by securing for limited Times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and Discoveries."

 

During the ratification debate, James Madison wrote in The Federalist No. 43, "The copyright of authors has been solemnly adjudged, in Great Britain, to be a right of common law." Madison's position reflected the natural rights philosophy of John Locke, who had observed, "Our handiwork becomes our property because our hands - and the energy, consciousness, and control that fuel their labor - are our property."

 

Later, with regard to patent rights, Abraham Lincoln noted that, "The patent system added the fuel of interest to the fire of genius," as IP rights serve both a utilitarian purpose in incentivizing innovation, and natural rights by allowing innovators to enjoy the rightful fruits of their labor.

 

larmingly, however, a new global IP survey released this week by the Property Rights Alliance (PRA) reveals that we're beginning to tempt precisely that fate by surrendering our leadership position.

 

Although the U.S. placed just 14th globally in overall property rights protection in last year's PRA Index, and a disturbing 20th in terms of legal and political ranking, we retained our traditional first-place ranking in the IP category, placing atop the global list in both patent protection and copyright protection. This year, however, we fell to second behind Finland.

 

"Alarmingly," the Index notes, "for the first time the United States fell from being 1st in the world for intellectual property protections to 2nd, yielding to Finland, which also passed New Zealand to become 1st in the Index overall."

 

That parallels a similarly disturbing slippage in the latest U.S. Chamber of Commerce Global Innovation Policy Center (GIPC) IP Index. Although the U.S. retained its number one worldwide ranking in overall IP protection, we slipped all the way to 16th in patent protection.

 

That decline is largely attributable to patent system changes that occurred during the Obama Administration, including the creation of a Patent and Trademark Appeals Board (PTAB) that eliminates at least one existing patent in nearly 80% of petitions before it. Judicial decisions interpreting federal laws in a way that weakened patent enforcement and substantive protections also played a role.

 

Fortunately, the Trump Administration appears to understand the importance of IP to America's economy, including its focus on protecting IP from foreign theft.

More than a hundred Central American migrants have forced their way through a customs gate at the Guatemalan border town of Tecun Uman to request passage into Mexico.

 

A Mexican official said Sunday that the group is seeking entry via Ciudad Hidalgo, Mexico.

 

Video from the Guatemalan newspaper Prensa Libre showed men arguing with Mexican immigration officials through the metal bars of a gate separating the two countries.

Dozens of Christians Killed, Church Burned, in Muslim Attack on Market in Kaduna State, Nigeria

 

JOS, Nigeria (Morning Star News) – Muslims attacked a market in Kaduna state, in north-central Nigeria, on Thursday (Oct. 18), killing dozens of Christians and burning a church building, sources said.

 

Area residents said a Muslim at the market in Kasuwan Magani, 36 kilometers (22 miles) south of the city of Kaduna, began yelling “Thief!” in the late afternoon in a move calculated to cause pandemonium ahead of an attack on Christians and their homes and businesses.

 

“A Muslim raised a false alarm about a thief in the market, which caused stampede, and then other Muslims started chanting ‘Allahu Akbar [the jihadist slogan, God is Greater],’ attacking Christians, burning houses and shops belonging to Christians in the town,” area resident Kefas Mallam told Morning Star News.

 

The Rev. James Moore of the town’s Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA), told Morning Star News that the assailants burned down one church building belonging to the Cherubim and Seraphim movement.
