FACT CHECK: Is Alleged Bomber Cesar Sayoc A Registered Democrat?

Laura Loomer, a conservative activist who has worked for Project Veritas and right-wing media outlet The Rebel, said in a tweet that Cesar Sayoc Jr., who allegedly sent potential pipe bombs to Democratic figures, is a registered Democrat. The media is reporting that #CesarSayoc is a Registered Republican. Documentation actually shows he is a registered DEMOCRAT! More lies from the media. pic.twitter.com/nssqEhuwAX — Laura Loomer (@LauraLoomer) October 26, 2018

Many other laypeople on Twitter also claimed that Sayoc is a registered Democrat. Verdict: False Records show that Sayoc registered as a Republican in March 2016.

Fact Check:

Law enforcement arrested Sayoc in Florida Friday in connection with over a dozen suspicious packages containing what appeared to be pipe bombs sent to CNN headquarters, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former President Barack Obama and other Democratic figures. He faces five federal charges and up to 48 years in prison if convicted. Some people on social media theorized that the packages were a “false flag” operation – sent by Democrats to other Democrats in order to make Republicans look bad before the midterm elections. Sayoc’s record on Nexis shows that he registered as a Republican in Florida on March 4, 2016. He frequently posted in support of President Donald Trump and criticized Democrats on social media.

Loomer and others pointed to Sayoc’s profile on MyLife, a website that collects information like addresses, birthdays and other public records on adults in the U.S., to back up the claim that he is a registered Democrat. MyLife listed Sayoc’s party affiliation as the “Democrat Party” as of 3:59 p.m. GMT on Friday, or 11:59 a.m. EST, an archived version of the web page shows. One minute later, it showed his party affiliation was the Republican Party. It is not clear whether Sayoc’s “Democrat Party” listing was created by MyLife or another user. The company did not respond to a request for comment.

MyLife allows anyone to change public information for a person’s listed political party, ethnicity, religion, income, work history and more. After Sayoc’s arrest, people also edited his profile to say that he worked for the Democratic National Committee and billionaire George Soros and changed his listed religion to “Scientologist” and “Jewish.” Sayoc is not the only victim of false information on MyLife. The site said that Obama is a member of the Republican Party as of Oct. 27.

ConsumerAffairs reviews for MyLife allege that the website lists incorrect information and that it displays personal information without consent. Loomer did not respond to a request for comment, but she replied to a correction of her tweet from Daily Caller News Foundation reporter Joe Simonson with skepticism. “He could like Trump but have been a Democrat is [sic] the past. Lots of Democrats changed party affiliation in 2016,” she said. “He clearly changed his registration.” Nexis does not list any additional party registrations for Sayoc. The Florida Secretary of State’s office did not respond to an inquiry attempting to confirm his voter registration history.

Paul Ryan: ‘Unfortunately’ the Right Now Practices Alinsky’s ‘Tribal Identity Politics’

Sunday on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Speaker of the House Paul Ryan (R-WI) said he believed conservatives have embraced “tribal identity politics,” in the style of leftist community organizer Saul Alinsky.

Host John Dickerson asked, “You’ve seen some President Trump’s rallies, do those rallies accentuate the things that unite us or are they — do they do something very successful in politics which is sow division in the country? Do you see that happening at his rallies?

Ryan said, “Sometimes, yeah. Not always but sometimes. I worry about tribal identity politics becoming the new norm of how politics is waged. As conservatives, we always thought this was sort of a left-wing Alinsky thing. Unfortunately the right practices identity politics as well. It’s the day and age, technology and everything else, identity politics which is now being pack practiced on both sides of the aisle is unfortunately working. I think we as leaders we got to figure out how do we make inclusive aspirational politics strategically valuable again.”

Nancy Pelosi’s Daughter Steps Outside the ‘Liberal Bubble’ in HBO Documentary

In the climactic moment of HBO’s documentary “Outside the Bubble,” a man who describes himself as a Trump warrior explains that he gave the nickname “Nancy Pelosi’s grandchildren” to masked demonstrators in Berkeley who beat him on the head with sticks. So the filmmaker takes Ben Bergquam on a walk to a nearby beach where, playing in the sand, are the House Democratic leader’s real grandchildren.

“Is this the set-up?” Bergquam asks, initially embarrassed but quickly warming to filmmaker Alexandra Pelosi’s two boys. It was, in a sense, what she hoped for in making “Outside the Bubble,” which premieres Monday on HBO — to connect people who might not ever speak to each other in a conversation, however brief. She’s not sure whether or not he knew at the time that she was Nancy Pelosi’s daughter; she sought her interview subjects by identifying herself as “Alexandra from HBO.” In the course of her reporting, Pelosi visited the site of a mass shooting in Sutherland Springs, Texas; talked to coal miners in Pennsylvania; met church-going Trump supporters in Alabama; and sought out the opinions of people in the hurricane-decimated refinery city of Port Arthur, Texas. She took a family vacation to see the border wall.

Call it Alexandra Pelosi’s listening tour of America. One of the things Pelosi loves about where she lives in New York’s Greenwich Village is the diversity, and the freedom people feel to be themselves. Yet the things she loves about this country are the same thing that others believe is wrong about America. “People who live in a liberal bubble do not have an understanding of this country,” she said. “I don’t think they spend enough time in America. If you live in New York City, you can’t say you live in America. Sorry, I know people will be offended by that.” But in her bubble, “we read the New Yorker and we watch MSNBC and we think the whole world should think like we do, and they don’t.”

One of Pelosi’s sons is dressing up as a ghost of the Republican Party past for Halloween, wearing a skeleton outfit and mask of George W. Bush. The family has a fondness for Bush, since Pelosi won an Emmy and launched her career with the 2000 campaign documentary, “Journeys with George.” Her kids also went to the United Nations to see the signing of the Paris climate accord, and were devastated when President Donald Trump decided to pull out of that agreement. That made her interested in visiting Port Arthur, where oil is king, and the mayor told her that struggling families didn’t have the luxury of worrying about global warming. “I needed my kids to hear that, because if you think global warming is the most important issue affecting this country — and I do — then you haven’t been to a community (where people) cannot feed their families.”

There’s a risk, however, that liberal viewers of “Outside the Bubble” will see some of her interview subjects as stereotypes that may simply baffle them, like the coal miner who voted for Trump because he would save the industry and still supports him despite recently losing his job. A Port Arthur woman said that people who believe in climate change are advertising their ignorance. “Do you really want to live in horses and buggies instead of cars?” she says. Pelosi said she was determined to show her interview subjects in their best possible light. She didn’t show people using hateful language, for instance, although some did during their interviews. It’s not in the interests of a Pelosi or HBO to make fun of Trump voters, she said.

While her latest journey may be a tough sell for some liberals, she also worries that Trump’s supporters will judge her by her last name and not watch. “You just can’t win in this media environment,” she said. “I’ll get it from the left and I’ll get it from the right. I don’t expect to win this one. I tried to listen. I genuinely went out with the mission to listen and try to understand. I hope some people will understand. If not, there’s no reaching them.”

Afghan election commission officials injured in blast near Kabul headquarters

A suicide bomber detonated explosives near Afghanistan’s election commission headquarters in Kabul on Monday, injuring at least six people, officials said. At least four officials of the Independent Election Commission (IEC) and two policemen were wounded in the attack, said Najib Danish, a spokesman for the interior ministry in Kabul. The attack came as officials at the IEC have begun counting votes after much-delayed parliamentary polls in 33 of Afghanistan’s 34 provinces were completed last week. “The suicide bomber blew himself up next to a car of an IEC staff member that was parked near a police checkpoint,” said an IEC official. It was not clear how many people were present at the time of the attack around the election commission’s sprawling compound located near an arterial road in Kabul.
