I work in construction around lots of people that are conservative Trump supporters who have begun speaking more freely about their disgust of immigrants. There is definitely a shift happening in the world, and it's very disheartening to see it affecting us as well. The one thing I tend to brag about when talking to people from other countries is our multiculturalism and accepting attitude towards migrants, it really sucks to see stuff like this happening. Toronto's multiculturalism is it's single greatest strength, I really hope this xenophobia that seems to be going around doesn't catch on.

Racists have had to hide their racism with euphemism for decades as progressive policies and laws have gained popular support.

With the election of idiot populists who revel in racism without the euphemism, they've been feeling more comfortable being free with it.

You can't hope for this to end. The only real solution is to oppose it with action. Vote for non-racist politicians. Donate to parties that meaningfully oppose xenophobia and reject racist candidates. Volunteer for candidates and parties that oppose the encroaching right wing populist authoritarian shift. It's happening all over the world because the racists have been angry and fearful they've been losing for decades, while Progressives have taken their stance for granted and assumed politics would naturally go their way without having to put effort or resources into it.

The death of euphemism is a sign of the next steps getting worse.

You only have one vote, but money and time can multiply your influence in politics by getting like-minded people passionate about issues you care about.
