I disagree that they were poverty stricken. They left Egypt with a ton of gold and possession as God told them to ask the Egyptians for their stuff, which they gave them. The people were ordered to not pick all of their produce so that widows could pick what they needed. Some were wealthier than others, like any society, some were evil some good. Some very rich like Abraham, David, Solomon and Boaz and many others. And those who were rich in animals and wealth were so due solely to God blessing them. So says the bible. So God obviously is not against people especially those of the household of faith, being rich.
