Pittsburgh Rabbi Receives Hate Mail for Saying He’d Be Honored to Meet Trump
The rabbi who led prayer services at the Tree of Life Congregation synagogue in Pittsburgh the day it was attacked by a deranged gunman has revealed he has received hate mail for saying he would be “honored” to meet with President Trump.
Rabbi Jeffrey Myers, who survived Saturday’s brutal attack by hiding in a bathroom until SWAT rescued him, said Monday that it would be his “honor” to “meet a president of the United States” when asked by NBC’s Savannah Guthrie if he would like to meet with President Trump when he arrives in Pittsburgh.
Appearing on CNN Tuesday, Myers revealed he had received hate mail for his comments.
“When I first said that the president was welcome, I’ve received a lot of emails, too numerous to count, I’ve received many that are not happy with those words. Those emails also contain hate. It just continues in this vicious cycle. We need to be better than this. We can be better than this.”
President Trump will visit Pittsburgh Tuesday afternoon where he is expected to meet with local Jewish leaders. White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said Monday that President Trump wishes to unite the country. “The president cherishes the American Jewish community for everything it stands for and contributes to our country. He adores Jewish Americans as part of his own family,” she said.
The synagogue shooting suspect, Robert Bowers, appeared in court Monday where he received an overview of the 29 charges against him. Bowers is accused of killing 11 congregants.

U.S. Attorney Designates District Election Officer
ALBUQUERQUE – U.S. Attorney John C. Anderson announced today that Assistant U.S. Attorney (AUSA) Jeremy Peña will lead the efforts of his Office in connection with the Justice Department’s nationwide Election Day Program for the upcoming November 6, 2018, general election. AUSA Peña has been appointed to serve as the District Election Officer (DEO) for the District of New Mexico and in that capacity is responsible for overseeing the District’s handling of complaints of election fraud and voting rights abuses in consultation with Justice Department Headquarters in Washington.
U.S. Attorney Anderson said, “For our democracy to function as intended, every qualified citizen must have the right to cast a ballot free from interference, discrimination or fraud. In partnership with federal law enforcement, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Mexico will be vigilant in ensuring that the right to vote is properly protected.”
The Department of Justice has an important role in deterring election fraud and discrimination at the polls, and combating these violations whenever and wherever they occur. The Department’s long-standing Election Day Program furthers these goals, and also seeks to ensure public confidence in the integrity of the election process by providing local points of contact within the Department for the public to report possible election fraud and voting rights violations while the polls are open on election day.
Federal law protects against such crimes as intimidating or bribing voters, buying and selling votes, impersonating voters, altering vote tallies, stuffing ballot boxes, and marking ballots for voters against their wishes or without their input. It also contains special protections for the rights of voters, and provides that they can vote free from acts that intimidate or harass them. For example, actions of persons designed to interrupt or intimidate voters at polling places by questioning or challenging them, or by photographing or videotaping them, under the pretext that these are actions to uncover illegal voting may violate federal voting rights law. Further, federal law protects the right of voters to mark their own ballot or to be assisted by a person of their choice (where voters need assistance because of disability or illiteracy).

Former Department Of Defense Employee Pleads Guilty To Attempting To Entice A Minor To Engage In Sexual Activity
Jacksonville, Florida – United States Attorney Maria Chapa Lopez announces that Mohammad Abdul Malek (67, St. Marys, GA) today pleaded guilty to attempted enticement and coercion of a minor. Malek faces a minimum mandatory penalty of 10 years, and up to life, in federal prison. A sentencing date has not yet been set.
According to the plea agreement, between August 23 and August 26, 2018, Malek engaged in email and text communications with an undercover detective posing as a 13 year-old girl. Malek asked for photos of the “child” and told her he wanted to teach her about “making love.” Malek was advised and acknowledged that the “child” was a minor, and suggested that they meet to engage in sex. On August 26, 2018, Malek traveled to Jacksonville to meet the “child,” and was arrested by officers from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
This case was investigated by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Immigration and Custom Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations. It is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Ashley Washington.
It is another case brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Led by United States Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children, and to identify and rescue victims.
