President Donald Trump says he may send up to 15,000 troops to border with Mexico where thousands of people are heading in a caravan seeking entry to US. This is more than double the number voiced previously by the Pentagon.

“We may go up to anywhere between 10,000 and 15,000 military personnel,” in addition to the existing border patrol staff, Trump told reporters outside the White House on Wednesday. By comparison, the US currently has approximately 14,000 troops in Afghanistan.

“Nobody’s coming in,” Trump said, adding that his administration will not allow in any immigrants who “don’t have the well-being of our country in mind.” He pointed to the violent incidents where members of both migrant caravans clashed with Mexican border guards and police, breaking through border fences.

The US president also underscored that anyone who does cross the US border will be detained in “tent cities” and other immigration detention facilities, as “we’re not doing releases” anymore.

Trump has often blasted the policy dubbed “catch and release,” where the authorities would release migrants who crossed the border illegally on a promise they would show up in court, partly due to a legal settlement preventing the government from separating families. He argued these policies have resulted in “25 to 30 million people” in the US illegally.

“I want people to come into our country, but they have to come legally and have to come through merit,” Trump said, stressing he is not against all immigration.

Classes were canceled as authorities searched for a person who reportedly attacked a student with a gun at CSU Channel Islands Wednesday morning, authorities said.

The Ventura County Fire Department responded just after 11 a.m. to the Camarillo campus. Emergency medical personnel transported the victim to a local hospital after suffering injuries in the attack with the gun, said Fire Capt. Brian McGrath.

An official with campus police said officers were investigating an incident but did not confirm if an assault had taken place. The official confirmed that the fire department responded to the campus regarding an injured person.

A campus housing Twitter account shared an emergency alert about the incident and stated classes were canceled and students should not come to the university. Those in dorm rooms should remain there with the doors locked.

The alert confirmed a student was physically assaulted with a handgun in a bathroom on the second-story of the Bell Tower building.

The attacker was described as female with medium complexion, about 24 or 25 years old and wearing a gray shirt, black pants and gray Converse shoes. She was last seen fleeing the area of the attack, according to the social media post.

The gun was described as a silver handgun, the alert stated. Students were also told they would receive another alert in 30 minutes.

Students on campus were also notified during a public address that informed them officers were searching for the woman with the gun. They were advised to stay way from the area near the Bell Tower building.

In a separate text notification, students were told there had been no additional incidents.

Chase Baker, 25, and Jacob Coyle, 20, were in a calculus class in the Bell Tower building when the injured student walked in.

"We’re in class and a girl in our class staggers in, hair all wet, clothes all ruined and says she was just attacked by girl in the bathroom with a gun," Baker said.

Coyle said there's a restroom right across the hallway from the classroom but he didn't hear any screams or a struggle. The victim had water dripping from her face and she was "shaking uncontrollably," he said.

The student wasn't bleeding but had a couple marks on her forehead, Coyle said.

Coyle, Baker and a few others ran outside the classroom after the student walked in. They were looking for the attacker but couldn't find anyone.

Meanwhile, some of the female students tended to the injured student and called 911.

Coyle said campus police and the Ventura County Sheriff's Office were on campus after authorities were called. Sheriff's officials said they were initially called to help search for the suspect but were later called off.

Students in the calculus class moved out into the hallway and watched as police interviewed the victim. Baker said he overheard the girl saying it was a random attack and there was a gun involved.
