As for POTUS, optics are a problem. As President, he can't be seen as condoning the leaking of govt secrets, especially by a foreign national like Assange.
It may be possible AFTER Fisa revelations and indictments are dropped. But until then, I'm guessing he can't do much to guarantee Assange safe passage.
(Whistleblowers always get screwed over, because it's human instinct to stick with the tribe.)

From what I can tell, they're trying to gaslight him with a "carrot and stick" approach applied capriciously, so he never knows what's coming.
