US Accuses Chinese State-Owned Company Of Stealing Micron Trade Secrets

So much for all that US-China trade truce talk.

Just hours after a presidential tweet expressing optimism about US-China trade talks helped save US stocks from turning red on the first trading day of the month (with an assist from Chinese President Xi Jinping, who later told Chinese media that he would be "willing" to meet with Trump at the G-20 summit later this month), the DOJ has unveiled an indictment filed in California against a Chinese state-owned company and three Taiwanese nationals for allegedly stealing trade secrets from Micron Technologies.

*U.S. SAYS CHINA STATE-OWNED CO. STOLE MICRON TRADE SECRETS

*U.S. CRIMINAL COMPLAINT ALSO NAMES THREE TAIWAN NATIONALS

*UNITED MICROELECTRONICS, FUJIAN JINHUA INDICTED IN U.S.

Allegations about the alleged theft of chip designs from Micron were first detailed in legal documents filed in the US and Taiwan, which were cited by the New York Times in an investigation published back in June detailing China's efforts to acquire by either legitimate - or, failing that, illegitimate - means trade secrets that the Chinese government saw as vital to its Made in China 2025 initiative.

Micron has been the subject of punitive measures, including an investigation in China, one of its biggest foreign markets, since spurning a $23 billion takeover offer from a Chinese company. Fujian Jinhua Integrated Circuit Company, one of the companies facing indictment, was accused by the NYT of being behind the elaborate technology theft, while Taiwan-based UMC reportedly helped Fujian carry out the heist, claims that both companies denied. The indictment will almost certainly escalate tensions between the US and China, which has been enraged by President Trump's demands that the Chinese government roll back its support for initiatives tied to Made in China 2025.

WaPo Claims MbS Told Kushner That Khashoggi Was A "Dangerous Islamist"

After publicly decrying the journalist's death as a "terrible mistake" and a "terrible tragedy," The Washington Post is reporting that - according to people familiar with the discussion - that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman described slain journalist Jamal Khashoggi as a dangerous Islamist days after his disappearance in a phone call with President Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and national security adviser John Bolton.

WaPo reports that during the call, which occurred before the kingdom publicly acknowledged killing Khashoggi, the crown prince urged Kushner and Bolton to preserve the U.S.-Saudi alliance and said the journalist was a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, a group long opposed by Bolton and other senior Trump officials.

However, the crown prince said during a panel discussion last week.

“The incident that happened is very painful, for all Saudis… The incident is not justifiable.”

Additionally, the Saudi ambassador to US, Khalid bin Salman, described Khashoggi last month as a “friend” who dedicated “a great portion of his life to serve his country.”

In a statement released to The Washington Post, Khashoggi’s family called the characterization of the columnist as dangerous Islamist inaccurate.

“Jamal Khashoggi was not a member of the Muslim Brotherhood. He denied such claims repeatedly over the past several years,” the family said.

“Jamal Khashoggi was not a dangerous person in any way possible. To claim otherwise would be ridiculous.”

Finally, and unsurprisngly, a Saudi official on Wednesday denied that the crown prince made the allegations, saying “routine calls do exist from time to time” with the young leader and top U.S. officials, but “no such commentary was conveyed.”

Just as the dust is starting to settle (at least in the media's goldfish-like news cycles), Turkey's statements on acid-dissolving Khashoggi's body and this reported 'bombshell' will likely push the US-Saudi relationship back to the front pages. The timing on the leak makes one wonder whether it is designed to put pressure on Trump to act against the Saudis, and/or whether this implied more pressure on the Saudis to spread the cash and payoff a few more raised voices to get back to the normal despotic regime they are used to.

Ex-Goldman Banker To Plead Guilty To 1MDB Criminal Charges, Forfeit $44 Million

Last we checked in with former Goldman Sachs SE Asia chairman Tim Leissner, the banker was nearing the nadir of a dramatic fall from grace that resulted in him being terminated from the bank, as it sought to distance itself from a series of shady bond underwritings organized by Leissner.

Goldman, as first reported in 2016, was deeply involved with the Malaysian government's efforts to seed the 1MDB development fund, which, as we now know thanks to the DOJ, was used by former Malaysian President Najib Razak as his own personal slush fund, with most of the money going to purchase luxury yachts, paints - and some of the money was even used to help finance the Hollywood blockbuster "The Wolf of Wall Street". In total, Razak and his cronies are believed to have stolen nearly $700 million.

Leissner

Back in July, it was believed that Leissner was planning to cooperate with federal authorities, raising the possibility that he could help expose some of the endemically corrupt practices happening behind the scenes at the Vampire Squid. Since WSJ exposed the fraud back in 2015 after 1MDB missed bond payments, the scandal has riveted the financial press and drawn intense scrutiny from the DOJ, with AG Jeff Sessions calling it "kleptocracy at its worst."

And now it appears Leissner - who is married to Kimora Lee-Simmons - has done just that. As the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday morning, the former banker is expected to plead guilty to conspiracy to launder money and violate the FCPA. As part of the settlement, he has agreed to a $44 million fine for his role in the scandal - a guilty plea that, we imagine, will lead to his eventual cooperation.

But while Leissner's situation is hardly ideal, his former deputy has it even worse. Roger Ng, the former deputy director of Goldman's SE Asia practice, is expected to be indicted by the DOJ, alongside Jho Low, the Malaysian financier whose exploits have been widely chronicled in the Western media. Low allegedly masterminded the 1MDB fraud.

Last week, Razak and his former Treasury secretary were charged with criminal breach of trust, months after Razak was imprisoned shortly after losing his reelection race to a rival who had promised to prosecute him.

As the DOJ prepares its announcement, attention will now turn to what, exactly, Leissner told investigators and whether his former employer could be held liable.

Media more to blame for dividing US than Trump, new poll suggests

Since he became president, many in the media have blamed Donald Trump for stoking division in the United States, but a new poll shows that while many agree that Trump deserves blame, more point the finger at the media itself.

The Politico/Morning Consult poll, released on Thursday, showed that 56 percent of Americans felt Trump had done more to divide people, with just 30 percent feeling like he had acted to unite the country.

But the news was worse for the media. A significant majority, 64 percent of Americans surveyed said that the media had done more to divide people — with only 17 percent believing the media had been a force to unite people.

While Republicans were more likely to say that Trump had tried to unite the country and Democrats were more likely to say he divided it, both parties were united in the belief that the media has been having a more divisive effect on society.

There was more division among respondents, however, when it came to the question of who was responsible for recent incidents of political violence across the country. The poll was conducted during a turbulent week in which a shooter killed 11 people in a Pittsburgh synagogue and explosive devices were sent to a number of high-

More than three-quarters (77 percent) of Democrats said that Trump and the Republican Party were to blame for the spate of political violence, only 14 percent of Republican voters blamed the president.

Trump’s critics have accused him of inciting violence by frequently lashing out at the media and his political opponents, but Trump continues to maintain that the media bears responsibility.

Following the mailing of explosive devices to Democrats last week, Trump tweeted that “purposely false and inaccurate reporting” was a “very big part” of the anger people were feeling in the country and instructed the mainstream media to “clean up its act”.

Tensions aside: US to take delivery of 4 rocket engines from Russia

Despite political tensions here on Mother Earth, Russian-American cooperation in space still persists. The US will take delivery of four Russian-built engines crucial for its Atlas rockets, with several more to come.

Four RD-180 rocket engines built by Russia’s NPO Energomash have been commissioned for the US buyers, the manufacturer said in a news release. “On October 26, 2018, Pratt & Whitney, United Launch Alliance and RD AMROSS singed the engine log books,” it reads.

Prior to the handover, Pratt & Whitney and United Launch Alliance (ULA) checked the engines along with NASA and US Air Force experts to ensure they are of good quality. The RD-180s are now ready to be shipped out, and this is not a one-of-a-kind purchase.

The Atlas V, equipped with an RD-180 engine, is seen in Lockheed Martin’s Final Assembly Building © Wikimedia Commons

Three more rocket engines will be supplied later in November. And in April, the US bought four more engines from Russia, according to Energomash.

The United Launch Alliance, a joint company owned by Lockheed Martin and Boeing, has relied on Energomash RD-180 engines for years to power the Atlas V rocket. They recently ordered 20 engines from Energomash despite economic sanctions imposed on Russia.

Aside from RD-180 engines, the US buys RD-181s from Russian manufacturers. The RD-181 is used to propel Antares rockets that launch Cygnus cargo tugs to the International Space Station for NASA.

When the US introduced its initial set of restrictions against Moscow, space exploration was excluded. As NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine said, “when other channels of communication break down, nations can still communicate on space exploration and space discovery and science.”

NASA has been doing its utmost to cut its dependency on Russian engines and to produce a viable alternative to the dual-nozzle, kerosene-fueled RD-180s, but to no avail so far. And while some Russian officials have at times vowed to ban the rocket engine sales, they are continuing.

Space is one of the few areas of Russia-US cooperation that remains relatively unscathed by political tensions. “We’re all breathing the same air. We can draw borders, but from space you can’t see them,” NASA astronaut Douglas H. Wheelock said last year.

“In the US we have a sarcastic saying: ‘We can put a man on a Moon, but we cannot figure out how to get along with our Russian partners,” the New York native said after working at Russia’s Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Star City.

France – Shock Scandal Over ‘Ain’ Region Babies Born Without Arms

France has launched a national investigation after parents contacted each other on social media as they found that in a certain region a lot of babies were born with missing arms or hands.

The findings have enraged many as it happened only weeks after an initial government inquiry in a similar matter, in another region, closed.

A first official investigation had begun after it emerged more than a dozen children had been born with the condition in clusters in two French regions between 2009 and 2014.

Health authorities failed to identify a common cause but many internet conspiracy theories about a certain pharmaceutical preparation taken during pregnancy or even tampering with the water in the area surfaced.

As now a further 11 cases emerged in the eastern region of Ain this year, officials were urged to open a fresh inquiry.

The condition means that a foetus fails to form correctly during pregnancy and the child is born missing upper limbs, missing forearms, and hands, or fingers.

There are now three regions in France where the cases are set to have happened: the rural Ain area not far from the Swiss border (where it was discovered only recently), as well as in Brittany and Loire-Atlantique, two regions on the north-west coast where the government launched an investigation into the births between 2009 and 2014.

Health Minister Ms Agnès Buzyn has assured worried French parents that the government would initiate a further investigation as the report lacks detailed explanations. The case has caused continued public concern and widespread media coverage.

Ms Buzyn: "I think all of France wants to know."

"We don't want to rule anything out. Perhaps it's do with the environment, or something they ate, or something they drank. Perhaps it's what they breathed - right now I just don't know."

All the cases reported in Ain, near the Swiss border involve people living in an 11 mile radius the small village known as Druillat. Many believe that a faulty water pipe or the possible influence of pesticides used could be involved.

Geneticist Dr Elizabeth Gnansia stated that the great number was highly alarming: "Let's imagine they are born between 2009 and 2014, which is five years, can you imagine that in a small rural school seven infants are in the same school with a type of amputation of forearm? We don't need statistics for that. It's highly significant. It's 50 times what you expect."

Jordan Peterson tackles gender roles: Don’t ‘socialize little boys to be more like little girls’

In a recent interview with British GQ, Jordan Peterson — the best-selling author and popular and controversial psychology professor from Canada — said that it’s important to avoid socializing “little boys to be more like little girls.”

He also tackled the subject of repressing aggression — specifically in young men.

What did he say?

In a wide-ranging interview, Peterson discussed “classical feminine interests” as well as “classically masculine interests,” and said that there’s no problem with both males and females having interchangeable interests that aren’t necessarily confined to gender roles.

However, he does have a problem when the education system dictates such roles and tries to feminize young men and masculinize young women.

“The problem is when it’s dictated by … the education system,” Peterson said. “[An influential 1980s psychologist] recommended as a control for male violence that boys be socialized more like little girls and I don’t think that that’s particularly an unpopular viewpoint.”

“The de-emphasis on competition, for example, in games,” he explained. “The increase in the rise of competitive games where scores aren’t kept. … It’s all a manifestation of that sort of theory, as far as I’m concerned. The idea that there’s something intrinsically wrong with competition — it’s a very foolish idea, especially if you want to motivate relatively aggressive boys, because they’re competitive.

“‘Well, competition, that’s not good, someone’s has to lose!'” he joked. “Well, you’re not going to get very far looking at the world that way, I’m afraid. Maybe you want to generate a plethora of games so that everyone has a [fair] shot at winning — that’s a good idea — but you certainly don’t want to devalue the notion of winning. … You should reward people who are particularly good at it.”

Peterson went on to note that competition — which clearly brings forth aggression in some cases — should not be suppressed or controlled, but should be monitored and integrated, as psychologist Carl Jung has asserted in the past when he discussed shadow integration.

“You don’t want to control aggression any more than you want to control sex. You want to integrate it. … You need to have the capacity for danger, you need to be dangerous,” Peterson explained. “But you need to learn how not to use it except when it’s necessary. And that is not the same as being harmless. Harmless — that’s a terrible virtue. … There’s nothing virtuous about harmlessness. It just means you’re ineffectual.”

What else?

Peterson added that while he encouraged the ambitions for his daughter and son to one day be parents, he encouraged his daughter to be a mother — and his son to be a father.

“Those are two very different things,” he explained.

Illegal Immigrant Who Raped A 14-Year-Old Girl Says "Not Unusual" Where He's From

An illegal immigrant is waiting to be sentenced after reentering the United States illegally. 42-year-old Cristian Manuel Yupa Yupa has already been deported once before after he sexually assaulted a 14-year-old girl. Yupa Yupa is from Ecuador and is set to be sentenced in U.S. District Court for reentering the U.S. illegally.

Yupa Yupa was indicted on May 16, 2018, of one count of re-entry of a removed alien after he was arrested at a job site in Lake County. Yupa Yupa was 25 in 2002 and living in Chicago when he was convicted of sexually abusing a minor.

After two years in custody, Yupa Yupa was finally deported but re-entered the U.S. again and that is when he was arrested for a second time in Lake County, Indiana, according to prosecutors. A sentencing memorandum was filed this week where Yupa Yupa explained how he was a longtime member of the indigenous Kichwa tribe.

The Kichwa tribe is in Canar, a remote area of Ecuador that is controlled by a local gang called the Sombra Negro gang. Yupa Yupa claims his father was murdered by the gang and his brother killed himself due to pressure from the gang. He told the court that he migrated to the U.S. to flee gang violence.

Yupa Yupa also said in the sentencing memorandum that he believes his life would be in danger if he were deported back to his home country of Ecuador. To add to his plea, Yupa Yupa explained how when he was a member of the Kichwa tribe years ago, he had a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old girl.

Yupa Yupa described the relationship as "consensual and not unusual for members of his tribe". He explained that he and his girlfriend continued the sexual relationship when they both came to the United States. Most states have their age of consent laws ranging from 16-18 but this was not always the case.

In 1880, the age of consent in most states was set between 10 and 12. But we are no longer in the 1800's nor are we in Ecuador and Yupa Yupa's sexual relationship was deemed rape in the eyes of the law. His defense attorney, Andrew Sidea, has filed a petition for asylum on behalf of his client, according to court records.

Yupa Yupa is seeking to be sentenced to credit for time served but will remain in custody until his immigration hearing. Due to limitations in Illinois statutory rape law, prosecutors noted that Yupa Yupa's prior sexual assault conviction did not qualify him as an aggravated felon. The state's attorneys asked the court to consider the nature, seriousness and other disturbing factors of his criminal history and asked for an 18-month prison sentence.

US and UK call for all participants to agree to cease-fire in Yemen’s civil war

Representatives from the governments of the United States and the United Kingdom have called for Saudi Arabia and other participants to end the civil war in Yemen before the end of November.

What did they say?

In a news release Tuesday, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that the U.S. was calling “on all parties to support UN Special Envoy Martin Griffiths in finding a peaceful solution to the conflict in Yemen based on the agreed references.”

“The time is now,” Pompeo said, “for the cessation of hostilities, including missile and UAV strikes from Houthi-controlled areas into the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Subsequently, coalition air strikes must cease in all populated areas in Yemen.”

Also on Tuesday, Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis said the U.S. government wanted to see “everybody around a peace table based on a cease-fire, based on a pullback from the border and then based on ceasing dropping of bombs that will permit the [United Nations] special envoy, Martin Griffiths … to get them together in Sweden and end this war” within 30 days.

On Wednesday, British Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Jeremy Hunt also called for an end to the hostilities, which he called an “incredibly worrying situation.”

Saudi Arabia has been a U.S. ally for years, but Republicans and Democrats have been calling for the U.S. to put more pressure on the kingdom after the death of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

How bad is the war in Yemen?

The Yemeni civil war has been dragging on since 2015. Saudi Arabia has been propping up the Yemeni government, while Iran has been helping Houthi rebels who are trying to overthrow that government. The U.N. has accused the Saudi-led coalition of hitting civilian targets, including schools, medical facilities, and weddings.

According to a United Nations report on Oct. 23, 8.4 million people in Yemen depend on food assistance, and roughly 75 percent of the Yemeni population needs at least some sort of aid. Another U.N. report from Oct. 15 said that Yemen could be experiencing the “worst famine in 100 years.”
