Jeff Zucker Says CNN Needs Trump To Have An Audience

CNN President Jeff Zucker made an embarrassing admission during an interview with Vanity Fair published Thursday, saying that his network depends on covering President Donald Trump in order to maintain the attention of its audience. When Zucker broached the question of why CNN spends such an inordinate time covering the president versus other subjects, Zucker said that he is practically dependent on him in order to keep their ratings. “We’ve seen that, anytime you break away from the Trump story and cover other events in this era, the audience goes away. So we know that, right now, Donald Trump dominates,” Zucker said.

Ironically, Zucker has repeatedly struggled to compete with Fox News and MSNBC, despite his now admitted strategy of obsessing over Trump’s every move. While CNN’s viewers have grown since the 2016 election, the network still regularly falls behind other news channels. Earlier in October, CNN even drew fewer viewers than Nickelodeon — and the latest ratings released showed that it had even fallen behind Hallmark Channel made-for-TV movies.

Claire McCaskill Rubber-Stamped Plan to End All Immigration Enforcement in U.S

Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) has most recently shifted gears on immigration, talking tough on border issues, although months ago the lawmaker co-sponsored legislation to end all immigration enforcement. During an interview with Fox News this week, McCaskill said she supports President Trump’s efforts to stop a migrant caravan of at least 7,000 to 10,000 Central Americans. “I think the president has to use every tool he has at his disposal, and I 100 percent back him up on that, whether it is turning them back because we are not equipped to handle that many asylum claims into our system,” McCaskill said. “I do not want our borders overrun and I support the president’s efforts to make sure they’re not.” McCaskill’s tough rhetoric on the border comes at the same time of her re-election bid, where she faces a tough challenge from Republican candidate Josh Hawley.

Aside from McCaskill’s F rating from NumbersUSA — indicating she supports amnesty, more legal immigration, and more importation of foreign workers — less than six months ago, McCaskill co-sponsored Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s (D-CA) open borders legislation that would end all immigration enforcement across the United States. McCaskill joined every Senate Democrat in co-sponsoring the legislation which would, as Breitbart News noted, prevent nearly every federal arrest at both the country’s northern and southern border. Feinstein’s legislation would also mandate that all children traveling with illegal alien adults across the border be kept with those border crossers, a plan that would force federal immigration officials to release the border crossing adult-child unit into the interior of the U.S.

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) previously called the Feinstein legislation “Child Trafficking Encouragement Act,” as it allows human smugglers to stay with the children they have trafficked at the border. McCaskill and Hawley are in a dead heat — like many other races across the country — despite the Democrat lawmaker’s attempt to align herself with Trump on immigration.

Donald Trump Vows Tent Cities To End Migrants’ Catch-and-Release

The U.S. government is already building tent cities to ensure that the caravan migrants and other economic migrants are not released when they ask for asylum, President Donald Trump said Thursday afternoon. “We’re putting up massive cities of tents, the military is helping us,” he told reporters in a White House briefing. “We have thousands of tents … We are going to hold them right there, we are not letting them into our country.” The migrants “are going to stay with us until the deportation or the asylum hearing takes place, we are not releasing them into the community,” he said.

The new policy will be announced next week, he said, adding that it is authorized by law. Trump suggested the new procedures are already being applied. “We’re not releasing any more, big changes as of a couple of days ago.” Migrants will be able to ask for asylum, he said, but will not get it if they are seeking jobs or healthcare, he said. Also, migrants have to ask for asylum at the official “ports of entry,” he said. “Migrants will have to present themselves at a Port of Entry … those who choose [to abuse] our laws and enter illegally will no longer be able to use meritless claims” to win asylum, he said. The number of migrants will decline once the new rules are established, he said. “When we are strong at the border, people will turn away, and they won’t bother … you will see the number of people trying to get in will be greatly reduced.”

108 House Democrats tell Jim Mattis troops should not be sent to the border

More than 100 House Democrats told Defense Secretary Jim Mattis on Thursday he should not send additional military personnel to the U.S.-Mexico border. A handful of ranking members from related House committees and 104 rank-and-file Democratic lawmakers sent the top Pentagon official a letter Thursday to say, first and foremost, they do not approve of the operation, and then to ask what it will cost the government.

"We are writing today to express our opposition to the decision to use additional troops on the southern border to assist U.S. Customs and Border Protection," the letter states. "The use of military personnel, however, will not help us meet this challenge and only exacerbates the potential to unnecessarily escalate the situation. This effort is nothing short of a militarization of the southern border to score political points and stoke misleading fears among Americans regarding immigrants," the group said.

House Armed Services Ranking Member Adam Smith of Washington, House Homeland Security Ranking Member Bennie G. Thompson of Mississippi, House Judiciary Ranking Member Jerrold Nadler of New York, and House Oversight and Government Reform Ranking Member Elijah E. Cummings of Maryland led the effort. The group asked Mattis to share how much the deployment of the 5,200 troops — in addition to the current deployment of 2,100 National guardsmen — will cost, as well as if they will be active-duty, National Guard, or Reserve. Democrats also asked how long the Defense Department expects this latest operation to last, and what the rules of engagement will be if they interact with people attempting to illegally enter the country and migrants in the caravan that is headed for the U.S. "Congress was recently notified that the Administration is sending an additional 5,200 troops to the border without a long-term plan or an analysis of the effectiveness of previous deployments from this year," they wrote. "This use of military personnel and resources for functions outside of core mission areas warrants additional Congressional oversight." The letter writers suggested a briefing to discuss the questions rather than a letter in response.
