Notre Dame prof agrees with Don Lemon: White men are 'biggest terror threat'

A professor at the University of Notre Dame tweeted that he agrees with CNN host Don Lemon's statement that white men are the "biggest terror threat" to America.

“Lemon said that, ‘we have to stop demonizing people and realize that the biggest terror threat in this country is white men, most of them radicalized to the right, and we have to start doing something about them,'" David Cortez tweeted Wednesday. "What's the lie?"

Cortez has also frequently tweeted about his opposition to President Trump and the Republican Party.

“Happy Halloween!! The President of the United States is a white supremacist. He’s not the first we’ve had, but he can be the last. #vote,” he said on Halloween. And, on morethan one occasion, Cortez has tweeted "#AbolishtheGOP

Cortez is an assistant professor of political science in the College of Arts and Letters at Notre Dame University. Currently, he is listed as teaching "Social Science University Seminar" in the Political Science department. The course is described as “a seminar for first-year students devoted to an introductory topic in political science in which writing skills are stressed.”

During the upcoming spring semester, Cortez is slated to teach "Latinos in US Politics," "Senior Seminar: American Citizenship in the 21st century," and two "Directed Readings" courses.

Prior to teaching at Notre Dame, Cortez received his Ph.D. from Cornell University's Department of Government. He has published numerous articles and delivered several presentations on Latinx politics, including "Vendidos, Race-Traitors, or Worse: Explaining the Rise of the La(tino) Migra."

Cortez’s CV lists his teaching/research interest areas as: Racial and Ethnic (Latinx) Politics, Social Identity, (Im)migration, Criminal Justice, and Street Level Bureaucracy. He is currently in the process of writing a book, titled Broken Mirrors: Identity, Duty, and Belonging in the Age of the New La(tinx) Migra.

The University of Notre Dame did not respond to a request for comment in time for publication.

Caravan is a concerted effort by Honduran leftists to bypass U.S. immigration laws

Border officials arrested nearly 400,000 people at the U.S.-Mexico border in 2018, up from 304,000 the previous year

Millions of foreigners dream of coming to the U.S. because of the three pillars of our society: freedom, economic opportunity and the rule of law.

And for most of its history the U.S. has been a welcoming country. The Department of Homeland Security says the U.S. granted 1.18 million people lawful permanent residence status or green cards in 2016. The average annual green-card rate for the past 30 years has hovered around 1 million.

But those in the caravan seek to force their way into the country —legally or otherwise—just as they bulldozed past the barricades set up by Mexican officials.

While the number of migrants entering illegally is down from two decades ago—there’s an estimated 11 million here now—illegal entries are growing again.

Reuters news wire claims border officials arrested nearly 400,000 people at the U.S.-Mexico border in 2018, up from 304,000 the previous year. That influx is complicating officials’ ability to manage and process the immigrants, especially those with children.

However, those were mostly individuals and smaller groups; this caravan was organized before it left Honduras.

According to The Wall Street Journal, “Honduran congressman Bartolo Fuentes of the left-wing Libre Party” claims credit for organizing it, and numerous immigrant organizations financially support such efforts. The question is why now?

A Rasmussen poll found that 51 percent of voters believe Trump should stop the caravan from entering the U.S. illegally; 38 percent disagree.

Democrats recognize the bad optics of what some are calling an “invasion” storming our southern border and are concerned that could energize conservative and independent voters, neutralizing Democrats’ hoped-for “blue wave.”

New batches of displaced Syrians return from Lebanon to their villages liberated from terrorism

Damascus Countryside, SANA- Hundreds of displaced Syrians on Monday returned to their villages and towns which have been liberated from terrorism by the Syrian Arab Army through the crossings of al-Dabbousyia, al-Zamrani and Jdeidet Yabous in framework of the joint efforts exerted by the Syrian government in cooperation with the Lebanese side for the return of all the displaced to the homeland.

SANA reporters at the crossings said that tens of buses entered the border crossings of al-Dabbousyia, al-Zamrani and Jdeidet Yabous coming from Lebanon with hundreds of Syrian citizens on board who have been displaced by the terrorist organizations which forced them to leave their homes in the countryside of Homs, Damascus, Hama and Aleppo.

SANA reporter at Jdeidet Yabous crossing in Damascus Countryside said that hundreds of the displaced Syrians arrived in the crossing on board buses that earlier entered to transport them to their houses in their villages and towns after restoring the basic services to them by the bodies concerned in the province.

In al-Qalamoun area in Damascus western countryside, SANA reporter at al-Zamrani border crossing said that scores of the private cars and trucks entered through the crossing coming from the Lebanese territories with hundreds of the displaced on board who are heading for their villages and towns which have been liberated from terrorism.

The returnees indicated that there are large numbers of the displaced Syrians who are willing to return to their villages and towns after restoring security and stability to them and they are waiting for finishing the required measures for that.

Syria’s economic capital is back to map of industrial activity, clothing production is just an example

Aleppo, SANA – The industry wheel in Syria’s economic capital has started to get on with the production line of famous Aleppo fabric industry’s turning back, although it hasn’t completely halted during the years of war.

Malhis, who is also Chairman of the clothing committee in Aleppo Chamber of Industry, said that tens of thousands of factories were either shut down or destroyed, and that caused a drop of their number to 500 only and that made the owners replace them with small workshops. Consequently, a weekly production of 600 items declined to a couple of hundreds.

“Rapidly, the factories started to re-run after security is restored to the area amidst businessmen’s awaiting this moment to come…their loss was enormous and they are eager to start all over again despite the retreat of the industry factors’ trinity: raw materials, power, manpower,” said Malhis.

“Unfortunately, there is a huge difference between the industry of Aleppo before and after the years of war, though sluggishly recovering, that is because factories were stolen, laborers were displaced and capitals moved not to mention the purchasing power weakness nationwide,” businessman Yousef Barakat said. “More markets should open and missions abroad should be held to cultivate the industrialists’ experience after years of stall.

Closer everyday,, people get ready there's a train a coming

'Human brain' supercomputer with 1 million processors switched on for first time

The world's largest neuromorphic supercomputer designed and built to work in the same way a human brain does has been fitted with its landmark one-millionth processor core and is being switched on for the first time

The newly formed million-processor-core Spiking Neural Network Architecture (SpiNNaker) machine is capable of completing more than 200 million million actions per second, with each of its chips having 100 million moving parts.

To reach this point, it has taken £15million in funding, 20 years in conception and over 10 years in construction, with the initial build starting way back in 2006. The project was initially funded by the EPSRC and is now supported by the European Human Brain Project. It is being switched on for the first time on Friday, 2 November.

The SpiNNaker machine, which was designed and built in The University of Manchester's School of Computer Science, can model more biological neurons in real time than any other machine on the planet.

Biological neurons are basic brain cells present in the nervous system that communicate primarily by emitting 'spikes' of pure electro-chemical energy. Neuromorphic computing uses large scale computer systems containing electronic circuits to mimic these spikes in a machine.

SpiNNaker is unique because, unlike traditional computers, it doesn't communicate by sending large amounts of information from point A to B via a standard network. Instead it mimics the massively parallel communication architecture of the brain, sending billions of small amounts of information simultaneously to thousands of different destinations.

Optical networking breakthrough will run networks 100x faster

Researchers reckon they could speed up the internet a hundredfold with a new technique that twists light beams within fiber optic cable rather than sending them in a straight path.

“What we’ve managed to do is accurately transmit data via light at its highest capacity in a way that will allow us to massively increase our bandwidth,” Dr. Haoran Ren, of Australia’s RMIT University, said in a press release.

The corkscrewing configuration, in development over the last few years and now recently physically miniaturized, uses a technique called orbital angular momentum (OAM).

I wrote about this spiral concept a few years ago: Scientists then obtained speeds of 2.56 terabits per second (2,560 gigabits per second) using light-wave signals spun into a corkscrew shape. They found that an open-air experiment they had tried was unwieldly so they migrated the technique to the more manageable medium of radio. There they obtained 32 gigabits per second.

RITT, however, says it can now run OAM spirals over fiber and do it economically, in part because it has miniaturized the equipment needed. It claims this will make OAM fundamentally viable and make it usable in conventional, existing data links.

“It fits the scale of existing fiber technology and could be applied to increase the bandwidth or potentially the processing speed of that fiber by over 100 times within the next couple of years,” RMIT Prof. Min Gu said. “This easy scalability and the massive impact it will have on telecommunications is what’s so exciting.”

DARPA Announces Next Phase of Electronics Resurgence Initiative

BRASILIA (Reuters) - Brazilian far-right president-elect Jair Bolsonaro said there was no point maintaining diplomatic relations with Cuba because it trampled on human rights and there was no business to be done with the communist-run island.

In an interview published on Friday by Correio Braziliense newspaper, Bolsonaro criticized the Mais Medicos (More Doctors) program under which 11,420 Cuban doctors work in poor or remote parts of Brazil.

He said that 75 percent of the doctors' salaries was paid to Cuba's government and their children were not allowed to join them in Brazil, citing the case of a doctor whose three young children had to stay in Cuba.

"That is just torture for a mother," Bolsonaro said. "Can we maintain diplomatic relations with a country that treats its people that way?"

Bolsonaro said the program, begun by leftist former president Dilma Rousseff to provide medical attention in areas where Brazilian doctors did not want to serve, could continue, but Cuban doctors would have to get their full pay and have their children with them.

The sanctions will penalize more than 700 entities and individuals who fail to stop importing Iranian oil, according to Mnuchin. The Trump Administration has also urged nations to cut their economic ties with Iran.

Eight countries will be granted a waiver for continued purchase of Iranian oil, Bloomberg reported. Those countries are said to include Japan, India, South Korea and China, but the official list is expected Monday.
