I think they made a failed attempt with Ross Perot. He just didn't have the charisma or the appeal.

Rally attendance is a far more important component of judging voter appeal than most people think. POTUS is doing a masterful job in his choice of venues and ability to churn up large crowds. Protesters don't mess with them, there are so many.
That scares them very, very badly. When POTUS' overflow is ten times larger than Hussein's crowds, that's telling.
It's the big, unspoken secret in the South. If he can pull even 15% of the black vote away, he wins. Any more than that and the party splits. Local dems are terrified, but don't want to address it.
