Law fag here. Despite what we know or think of AJ, the benefit of the lawsuit is, any half-way decent lawyer can through the "discovery process," get to the bottom of the fuckery! His lawyers would be able to subpoena records, request documents, request answers to specially prepared questions (interrogatories), and set depositions for the plaintiffs and any experts they have retained. The depositions can be videotaped, and could be very revealing. If the truth comes out (Doubtful, it would likely be settled with a gag order on the terms, if too much starts to come out!), it would benefit everyone questioning mass shooting FF's!
