Despite crackdown, 'junk news' still flourishes on social media

Despite an aggressive crackdown by social media firms, so-called "junk news" is spreading at a greater rate than in 2016 on social media ahead of the US midterm elections, according to researchers.

Oxford Internet Institute researchers concluded that Facebook and Twitter remain filled with "extremist, sensationalist, conspiratorial, masked commentary," and other forms of "low-quality" news.

In analyzing some 2.5 million tweets and 6,986 Facebook pages over a 30-day period, the study found that less than five percent of the sources referenced on social media were from public agencies, experts or political candidates themselves.

"We found that the proportion of junk news circulating over social media has increased in the US since 2016, with users sharing higher proportions of junk news than links to professional content overall," the report released Thursday said.

It added that "junk news once concentrated among President (Donald) Trump's support base has now spread to include communities of mainstream political conservatives."

Philip Howard, director of the institute and a study author, said the latest research did not seek to analyze how much of the content came from automated accounts or "bots," or whether it was directed from foreign entities.

Feds accuse Chinese firm of stealing trade secrets of US tech giant

The US Justice Department has accused China to be involved in industrial espionage. According to a press release from the department, the Chinese government has made memory chips that store data its centralized science and technology strategy only to cover its espionage activities.

In an indictment [PDF] that was unsealed on Thursday, the department specifically pointed out the Fujian Jinhua Integrated Circuit of China, and United Microelectronics Corporation of Taiwan to be involved in industrial espionage. The indictment also named some employees of these companies including the president of Jinhua for attempting to steal trade secrets about semiconductor technology.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions also announced to take necessary measures to address the corporate spying activities and cyber attacks from China against US-based corporations. Sessions stated that espionage activities of China are on the rise currently.

Islamic State gunmen kill seven Coptic Christians in Egypt bus attack

Gunmen attacked a bus carrying Coptic Christians in central Egypt on Friday, killing seven in the latest assault on the religious minority claimed by the Islamic State group.

The attackers opened fire on the bus of pilgrims in Minya province after they had visited a monastery, Bishop Makarios of Minya said. A security source confirmed that seven people were killed in the attack and seven wounded.

The attack took place on the road back from the Saint Samuel monastery, Makarios added, as the bus was heading to the city of Sohag. He said the wounded had been taken to a hospital in Beni Mazar, around 200km (124 miles) south of Cairo.

The Islamic State group claimed the attack in a message via its propaganda agency Amaq. “Those who carried out the ambush … in Minya are fighters of the Islamic State,” Amaq said in a statement on the Telegram messaging app.

Egyptian state television said security forces were on Friday afternoon still in pursuit of the attackers, while President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi offered his support to the victims in a statement on Twitter.

General Motors collected location & radio listening habits data of 90,000 drivers

The listening habits of around 90,000 drivers of General Motors in Chicago and Los Angeles were monitored by the company for three months in 2017 under its radio-tracking program.

The Detroit Free Press reported later released a report that General Motors was involved in targeted advertising in cars. Now the company has publicly admitted that it is collecting data and trying to use Telemetics data intelligently.

According to their report, General Motors records even the smallest details of the drivers including the favorite station, ZIP codes of vehicle owners, and volume level, etc. The built-in Wi-Fi signal is used for uploading the acquired data to its servers.

It seems like the motive behind this data capturing was to identify the correlation between what the drivers preferred to listen to and what they buy, and then the company sold this data to radio operators and advertisers. General Motors had become too specific in its tracking tactics; it even tracked a driver’s listening preferences while he was taking a break at a Tim Horton’s restaurant.

Unlike Toyota that promised to not collect and sell telematics data, General Motors is quite keen on doing so publicly. In his presentation to the Association of National Advertisers in Sep 2017, the global digital transformation director of General Motors Saejin Park explained the way the company secretly exfiltrated data about the radio-listening habits of the drivers in LA and Chicago from the cars.

However, the company maintains that the data was never sold. The presentation, probably, was delivered to advertising bigwigs in an expectation to elicit bids for the data. Saejin Park also claimed that by matching the audio feeds from the digitally driven XM radio, AM and FM, the company aim to study the link between consumer behavior and radio cues.

Facebook Blames Malicious Extensions in Breach of 81K Private Messages

Investigators posed as buyers and were offered the messages at 10 cents per Facebook account.

Hackers have published what they claim are private messages from at least 81,000 Facebook accounts – and they say the trove contains a fraction of the details they have from a larger cadre of 120 million accounts.

In an English-language Dark Web advertisement (now taken down), the perpetrators offered the messages for 10 cents per account.

The BBC Russian Service investigated the supposed heist along with cybersecurity firm Digital Shadows. The team found that within the 81,000 Facebook users in the sample posting, those in the Ukraine and Russia are the main targets (although some others were also impacted, including in the U.K., U.S. and Brazil).

Facebook for its part said that no hack or data breach has happened and that the messages were probably purloined via malicious browser extensions (it didn’t specify which ones). However, it did announce that it’s scrutinizing account security in the wake of the news, and, “we have contacted browser-makers to ensure that known malicious extensions are no longer available to download in their stores,” according to Facebook executive Guy Rosen, speaking to the BBC.

He added, “We have also contacted law enforcement and have worked with local authorities to remove the website that displayed information from Facebook accounts.”

U.S. carrier leads warships in biggest ever Japan defense war game

ABOARD USS RONALD REAGAN (Reuters) - U.S. fighter jets darted over the Western Pacific on Saturday as the nuclear powered USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier joined Japanese destroyers and a Canadian warship for the biggest combat readiness war game ever staged in and around Japan.

Japan and the United States have mobilized 57,000 sailors, marines and airmen for the biennial Keen Sword exercise, 11,000 more than in 2016, with simulated air combat, amphibious landings and ballistic missile defense drills. Japan’s contingent of 47,000 personnel represents a fifth of the nation’s armed forces.

“We are here to stabilize, and preserve our capability should it be needed. Exercises like Keen Sword are exactly the kind of thing we need to do,” Rear Admiral Karl Thomas, the commander of the carrier strike group, said during a press briefing in the Reagan’s focsle as F-18 fighter jets catapulted off the flight deck above him.

Eight other ships joined the carrier for anti-submarine warfare drills in a show of force in waters that Washington and Tokyo fear will increasingly come under Beijing’s influence.

“The U.S.-Japan alliance is essential for stability in this region and the wider Indo Pacific,” Rear Admiral Hiroshi Egawa, the commander of the Japanese ships said aboard the Reagan

Based in Yokosuka near Tokyo, it is the biggest U.S. warship in Asia, with a crew of 5,000 sailors and around 90 F-18 Super Hornets fighters.

U.S. armed forces member killed in Afghanistan insider attack: NATO

KABUL (Reuters) - A member of the U.S. armed forces was killed and another was wounded on Saturday in an apparent insider attack in the Afghan capital Kabul, the NATO-led Resolute Support mission said.

The attack is the latest in a series of “green-on-blue” attacks in which members of the Afghan forces have killed U.S. or coalition advisers this year and follows the death of a Czech soldier in the western province of Herat last month

“Initial reports indicate the attacker was a member of the Afghan National Defense and Security Forces. Initial reports also indicate the attacker was immediately killed by other Afghan Forces,” the NATO-led mission said in a statement

It said the incident was being investigated and the wounded service member was in a stable condition, but did not release the identity of the service member who had been killed.

Cuba lashes out at Trump administration over new sanctions

HAVANA (Reuters) - Cuba on Friday said new sanctions planned by the United States were a futile attempt to change its policies and would only further isolate Washington internationally.

U.S. President Donald Trump’s national security adviser, John Bolton, announced on Thursday that more than two dozen Cuban companies associated with the Communist-run island’s military or intelligence would be added to the more than 100 that Americans are already banned from doing business with or patronizing.

The announcement came just an hour after 189 member countries of the United Nations called in a resolution for an end to the U.S. economic embargo on Cuba. Washington tried without success to amend the text to push Cuba to improve its human rights record.

The U.N. vote can carry political weight, but only the U.S. Congress can lift the more than 50-year-old embargo, which Cuba calls a blockade. The United States and Israel voted against the resolution.

Bolton outlined the Trump administration’s plans to get tougher on Cuba and its allies Venezuela and Nicaragua in Miami, the heart of the three countries’ exile communities, just days before the midterm U.S. congressional elections.

Just 23 member governments and regimes voted in favor of creating the new czar, while 18 voted against and six abstained.

The measure was pushed forward by a tight-knit network of communist and socialist governments in Latin America with close ties to Marxist terrorist groups, Western globalists, Moscow, and Beijing.

Australian TV Exposes Britain’s Westminster Paedophile Scandal

Australia broadcast an explosive 60 minute report on the Westminster paedophile network on Sunday evening, that has sent shockwaves around the world.

‘Spies, Lords and Predators’ looked at what the host described as Britain’s ‘biggest ever scandal’ that is likely to ‘rock the British establishment’.

The programme features an interview with Richard Kerr, who lived as a boy at Kincora boys’ home in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Earlier today, Exaro uploaded its own video interview with Richard Kerr, in which he says that child sex abuse at Kincora was all about political leverage.

The programme also filmed an interview with Esther Baker, who alleges that she was sexually abused by two politicians.

And a man identified by Exaro only as “Darren” is interviewed anonymously in the programme. Darren became the third witness to give an account to us of how prominent people carried out child sex abuse at Dolphin Square, the apartment complex favoured by MPs.

In addition, Kevin Allen, brother of Martin, who disappeared as a 15-year-old in 1979, is interviewed for the programme. Kevin believes that Martin was abducted and murdered by a member of the ‘Westminster paedophile network’.

When he raised his suspicions with police many years ago, he says that a senior officer told him: “You keep saying things like that, you could get hurt.”

Zac Goldsmith, a Conservative MP who was part of the initial cross-party group of seven who last year called for an overarching inquiry into child sex abuse, agrees with the programme’s reporter that the ‘Westminster paedophile network’ is the “biggest political scandal in British history”.
