Down with US’: Trump effigy & dollars burned in Iran as protesters decry sanctions return (PHOTOS)

A day ahead of the anti-Iranian sanctions coming back into force, thousands took to the streets of Tehran to condemn the US and Donald Trump. Marking the 1979 US embassy takeover, the rally saw American and Israeli flags burned.

Crowds held anti-American banners, some of which read ‘Down with US’, in the Iranian capital on Sunday. An effigy of the US President Donald Trump, placed on huge prints of a 100 US dollar banknote, was burned outside the former US embassy, while others were seen burning actual dollars.

Local media reported that similar demonstrations were held across the country.

RT’s video agency Ruptly on Sunday asked Tehranis about the impact of sanctions on their lives. Some said they’re already used to them, while others chose to downplay the effect.

“Regarding oil sanctions, we had experience of it in previous periods and we could also get through them somehow,” a man named Moaref told Ruptly. Another man, Mohammadi, called the US-imposed measures on oil“senseless slogans” that have “no impact on people's lives.”

However, one woman named Tahereh said that the sanctions will “definitely affect people’s lives.” “Even if those sanctions cannot be seen in the market, it certainly affects people’s minds and creates problems among people,” she added.

November 4 marks 39 years since the 1979 US embassy takeover. Back then student activists stormed the US diplomatic compound, taking 52 embassy staff hostage. The 444-day siege led to the two nations cutting ties, not having restored relations to this day.

Iran celebrates the embassy takeover every year as a blow against Washington, which had supported the autocratic rule of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the last shah of Iran. The latter was overthrown during the 1979 Iranian Revolution. The closed US embassy compound, locally known as the “nest of spies,” is currently a cultural center.

Tensions reached boiling point in May this year, after Donald Trump walked away from the historic 2015 Iranian nuclear deal. Even key US allies, including France and Germany, failed to talk Trump, the long-time critic of the deal, out of the decision. The US withdrawal from the deal came despite the fact that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed Tehran’s compliance with the accord on numerous occasions.

Keen Sword: US and Japan stage largest wargames in Pacific amid tensions with China (VIDEO)

Washington and Tokyo have amassed a record number of sailors, marines and airmen for the biggest joint naval drill that the two allied nations have ever held close to Chinese shores as tensions keep rising in the region.

Around 47,000 troops from the Japan Self-Defense Force have been joined by more than 10,000 US servicemen for the Keen Sword 19 military exercise – the biggest drill of its kind since the biennial joint maneuvers were launched in 1986. The US forces participating in the drill include the bulk of the Seventh Fleet, as well as the Submarine Group 7 – both of which are based in Japan's Yokosuka. Tokyo has deployed roughly a fifth of its military. Two Canadian warships are also taking part in the exercise.

The record-breaking drill is set to demonstrate "the strength and durability of the US-Japan alliance" and the nations' "shared pursuit of a free and open Indo-Pacific region," Lieutenant General Jerry Martinez, who leads the US troops stationed in Japan, told reporters as the wargames kicked off earlier this week.

The navies are tasked with practicing amphibious assaults and ballistic missile defense, as well as aerial combat, all close to Chinese waters. The US nine-ship strike group, led by the nuclear-powered Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS 'Ronald Reagan,' is also engaged in training for anti-submarine warfare.

Military officials noted that Keen Sword showcases the allied fleets' ability to jointly counter crises emerging in the strategically important Pacific region. To improve interoperability, the allied fleets practiced sharing logistic data and delivered supplies to each other's ships.

Japan, led by the right-wing Liberal Democratic Party, has been ramping up its armed forces in accordance to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's pledge to enshrine a more assertive role of the military in the nation's largely pacifist post-WWII constitution. In March, Japan created its first elite marine assault unit, the Amphibious Rapid Deployment Brigade. In September, Tokyo sent its newest and largest warship – helicopter carrier JS 'Kaga' – on a two-month tour in order to promote a "free and open Indo-Pacific" and to foster stronger military ties with Pacific states like the Philippines.

Beijing, meanwhile, had been warning the US and Japan against violating its sovereignty by letting their ships and warplanes come near its territorial waters. Chinese officials had accused the US of abusing the 'freedom of navigation' principle, and are saying that its naval maneuvers contribute to the rise of tensions in the already contentious region. In September, a Chinese warship almost suffered a collision with Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS 'Decatour' as it was trying to fend off the US vessel Beijing said came too close to its waters in the South China Sea.

In response to Washington's activity in the region, China announced that it will also step up its naval capabilities. The nation must "concentrate preparations for fighting a war" and increase the amount and scope of military exercises, President Xi Jinping declared last week.

You Americans here. You do not think. You do not SEE that Trump is bringing war to your lands.

It would be good for YOU to get a taste of your own medicine. Running in the streets screaming and crying like Syria, Yemen, Ukraine, Venezeula, Iran, Veitnam etc.

War will find YOU.

German FM says EU needs to revise disarmament policies with historic INF Treaty about to collapse

The German foreign minister believes Europe needs to re-think arms control and disarmament strategies to preserve peace in the union following the abrupt US decision to quit the landmark INF accord.

The crucial nuclear treaty was signed in late 1980s and was always considered a milestone in ending the arms race between the two superpowers, the US and the USSR. Issues regarding the pact were raised again by Heiko Maas in his article for Der Spiegel newspaper on Saturday. The German FM has repeatedly stressed the importance of the agreement, from which Donald Trump decided to withdraw in October this year.

Maas asserted that an end to the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty would “bring down one of the greatest achievements of disarmament policy.” He recalled that the then-US president Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev knew about the importance of arms control and disarmament, as they took “courageous steps” to reduce their countries’ arsenals during the last years of the decades-long Cold War.

The high-ranking politician explained that, unlike Washington, the EU is not planning to “rush out” of the Cold War-era pact. Leaving the treaty “would fuel uncertainties and global armament tendencies,” according to Maas.

We need to rethink arms control and disarmament policies if we want to preserve peace in Europe. The current rules are… often outdated by technological developments.

Maas identified several key points upon which international security must be based. They include information exchange between Europe, Russia and the US; and transparent monitoring for missiles and cruise missiles.

Trump’s decision raised eyebrows in Russia, which said that it had started working on responses to US claims of pact violations. Russian Ambassador to the US Anatoly Antonov recently stated that Moscow supports making the pact a multilateral agreement to include not only China, but also NATO states.

US quitting the landmark pact may be 'a problem for Europe'

Washington’s move “is going to be a problem for Europe,” Annie Machon, a former intelligence officer for MI5, told RT. She noted that the pact “was put in place precisely to ensure the security of Europe.”

It is very damaging to Europe’s security that the US is unilaterality about to tear up this agreement.

The INF question is taking place at a “murky time” for international diplomacy and international treaties, according to Machon. She was referring to Trump’s recent grilling of EU states for not contributing enough to NATO. Back in July, he warned that if the alliance’s wealthiest economies weren’t paying two percent by January, then the US ‘is going to do its own thing.’

The INF was one of the treaties that Europeans regarded as very important from a security point of view, Martin McCauley, author and Russia analyst told RT. “The ‘umbrella’ was there – the American agreement, the Soviet agreement – they felt secure,” he added, suggesting that many European states would be “nervous” with the Americans withdrawing from the treaty.

Then you might wanna pit a diaper on because you will shit yourself the moment you realise war isn't just guns and missiles.

Natural disasters aren't so natural.

US would be history if Russia nukes Yellowstone volcano with mega-bombs’ – expert

Russia must develop the capability to destroy the US in a single swift blow if it wants to persuade the Americans to end the nuclear arms race and return to the negotiating table, military expert Konstantin Sivkov said.

In order to curb the aggression from the West, Moscow shouldn’t compete with Washington in number of nukes, Sivkov wrote in a new article. The president of the Academy of Geopolitical Problems believes that an “asymmetrical response” would work much better for Russia, as it is able to produce nuclear weapons with a yield of more than 100 megatons.

If “areas with critically dangerous geophysical conditions in the US (like the Yellowstone Supervolcano or the San Andreas Fault)” are targeted by those warheads, “such an attack guarantees the destruction of the US as a state and the entire transnational elite,” he said.

The production of around 40 or 50 such mega-warheads for ICBMs or extra-long-range torpedoes would make sure that at least a few of them reach their target no matter how a nuclear conflict between the US and Russia develops, the expert said.

Such scenario “again makes a large-scale nuclear war irrational and reduces the chances of its breakout to zero,” Sivkov said.

The possession of such weapons by Russia is what would finally make Washington start talking to Moscow and give up on its sanctions policy towards Russia, the expert said.

On Monday, US President Donald Trump warned Russia and China that Washington intends to build up its nuclear arsenal until “people come to their senses.”

Trump reiterated his commitment to unilaterally abandon the landmark Intermediate Nuclear Forces in Europe (INF) treaty, saying that “Russia has not adhered to the agreement,” neither in form or in spirit.

Moscow decried the US plans, saying that an American withdrawal from the INF would “make the world more dangerous.”

The Russian presidential press-secretary, Dmitry Peskov, said that Trump’s words were “a de facto declaration of intent to launch an arms race,” adding that Russia would act to protect its national interests in view of statements like this.

In recent years, Moscow and Washington have repeatedly accused each other of violating the 1988 INF deal. While the US has alleged that Russia has developed missiles prohibited by the treaty, Russia insists that the American anti-missile systems deployed in Eastern Europe can actually be used to launch intermediate-range cruise missiles.
