That could be too. But I've seen lens flare do some really bizarre things. Sometimes even looking like a 3D object hovering orb. Anyway, I can see your point, the flare is coming from a point that would be the back of a person's ear handles for their glasses.
Either way, I think it is convincing that the light behind the guys' ear isn't some type of secret agent device.
