Assassination Of Prominent Tribal Leader Sparks Crisis Between Arabs And SDF In Raqqa

“Sheikh Basheer was assassinated because he had rejected the SDF occupation and their control of Raqqa. He told them in their respected council: you are guests on our land and Raqqa belongs to its people,” the joint statement said.

Furthermore, the four tribes, which are among the biggest and most influential tribes in Raqqa, called on all Arabs to stop their political and social collaboration with the SDF. In the end of their statement, the tribes stressed that Raqqa “should be returned to its people.”

ISIS’ “Little Caliphate” Grows In Euphrates Valley Thanks To Actions Of US-led Coalition And Its Proxies

The ISIS-held pocket in the Euphrates Valley (the main ISIS stronghold is Hajin village) had remained untouched for a long time. The US-led coalition and the SDF in-fact ignored the ISIS presence in the area declaring multiple “offensives” on the terrorist group, but taking no notable actions to turn statements into reality. The US sees the “ISIS threat” in Syria as a useful explanation to justify its military presence in the war-torn country. At the same time, some top US officials have openly admitted that Washington is seeking to remain in the country in order to limit the Russian influence there and to force Iran to withdraw its forces from there (to defend Israeli interests).

Iraqi PMU Vows To Eliminate ISIS In Syria’s Euphrates Valley After US-backed Forces Fail To Do This

On November 4, Hashem al-Moussawi, a commander in the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Units (PMU), said that Iraqi forces are ready to launch a military operation against the remaining ISIS fighters inside Syria if the Iraqi and Syrian governments agree on this. The U.S. will not likely allow Iraqi forces to launch such an attack inside Syria, especially that it views the PMU as an Iranian proxy force. Some Syrian activists even argue that the U.S. wants ISIS to maintain a foothold in Syria in order to use it as an excuse to keep its troops in the war torn country.

US Says Turkish Strikes On Kurdish Militias In Northern Syria Puts Its Troops At Risk

“Unilateral military strikes into northwest Syria by any party, particularly as American personnel may be present or in the vicinity, are of great concern to us,” Deputy State Department spokesman Robert Palladino stated during a news conference in Washington on October 31. He added that the US and Turkey is in touch to de-escalate the situation.

Despite this, the US deployed additional troops and equipment nera Kobani and Manbij using its forces as human shields to prevent further Turkish strikes on positions of its proxies.

Saudis Furious With Washington Post Coverage, Call For Amazon Boycott

President Trump's long-running vendetta against Jeff Bezos, The Washington Post and Amazon got an unexpected supporter over the weekend, when Saudis, furious at The Washington Post’s coverage of the kingdom in the aftermath of Jamal Khashoggi’s murder, have called for a boycott of Amazon.com because of its shared ownership by U.S. billionaire Jeff Bezos.

As Bloomberg reports, "Boycott Amazon" was the top trending hashtag on Twitter in Saudi Arabia for several hours on Sunday, as users circulated images showing the deletion of the Amazon smartphone app.

"I was so excited for Black Friday! But unfortunately since #Washingtonpost is double standards against my country #saudiArabia and support propaganda of Erdogan I decide to stop any plans to buy anything in @amazon," one tweet read. It was repeated eight times on different accounts with the same spelling errors, suggesting at least some of the anti-Amazon resistance was being led by bots. Bloomberg's efforts to contact users behind those accounts weren’t successful.

Saudi citizens - feeling that their country is under attack since Saudi agents killed Khashoggi, a WaPo columnist and dissident, at the kingdom’s consulate in Istanbul - also called for a boycott of regional subsidiary Souq.com, acquired by Amazon last year.

Saudi anger boiled over after the WaPo published a scathing op-ed article by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday in which Erdogan claimed that "we know that the order to kill Khashoggi came from the highest levels of the Saudi government", as well as by the newspaper’s ongoing coverage of gruesome information about the murder obtained from anonymous Turkish officials.

"It became clear before our eyes that this is an organized media war," said Bandar Otyf, a Saudi journalist with more than 100,000 Twitter followers who was among those calling for the boycott.

"As Twitter users and activists and citizens, we don’t have power abroad, but we have simple things like boycotting", Otyf said.

In what will come as music to Trump's ears, Otyf said that many Saudis are learning for the first time that Bezos, the founder and chairman of Amazon, separately owns the Washington Post, adding that "if we affect even a portion of their business, we’re satisfied."

US Threatens SWIFT With Sanctions If Iran Isn't Cut Off

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin threatened the global financial messaging service SWIFT on Friday that it could be penalized if it doesn’t cut off financial services to entities and individuals doing business with Iran. The warning came just days ahead of the US re-imposition of all US sanctions on Iran that had been lifted under the 2015 nuclear deal, which will take effect at midnight tonight and cover Iran's shipping, financial and energy sectors.

Speaking to reporters, Mnuchin was quoted by Reuters as saying that "SWIFT is no different than any other entity," adding "We have advised SWIFT that it must disconnect any Iranian financial institutions that we designate as soon as technologically feasible to avoid sanctions exposure."

The CIA Was Behind a Massive Drug Trafficking Operation in Argentina, Russian Drug Smuggler Claims

A Russian man accused of trying to smuggle about 900 pounds of cocaine from Argentina to Russia said the CIA was behind the massive drug-trafficking operation and that he has been set up.

The suspect, Andrei Kovalchuk, is the man authorities accuse of being the mastermind behind the appearance of 16 suitcases filled with high-quality cocaine—worth over $60 million in Russia—in a storage area at the Russian Embassy in Buenos Aires. Argentina’s security forces seized the suitcases in December 2016 after they received a tip from the Russian ambassador. Argentine security officials called the operation one of the most “complex and extravagant” drug operations the country has encountered.

Kovalchuk reportedly lives in Germany and has an international warrant out for his arrest. His lawyer claimed Kovalchuk abandoned the suitcases at the embassy filled with coffee, cigars and alcohol, not cocaine. The lawyer alleged that the appearance of the cocaine was a set-up by the CIA and Argentinian police to tarnish the name of the Russian embassy. Kovalchuk is prepared to travel to Russia to “prove his innocence and establish the truth,” the lawyer declared.

However, the attorney has failed to provide any evidence that the CIA was involved in the drug smuggling operation.

Kovalchuk is believed to be a former Russian Foreign Ministry official. On February 23, a Russian businessman gave an interview to a Russian-language television channel in Germany and claimed that he had met Kovalchuk several years ago. He added that alleged drug smuggler claimed to be a colonel in the Russian security forces.

Five other men have been arrested in connection with the drug smuggling, two in Argentina and three in Russia. The colorful suitcases were filled with flour and shipped back to Russia, where the alleged smugglers were apprehended when trying to pick them up.

Ishtimir Khudzhamov, one of the men arrested in Russia, also claimed that he was framed and that the case is a “big provocation,” but he did not say who he believed set him up.

Some, however, suspect that Russian government officials were at least aware of the drug smuggling operation. Some claim that it would be impossible for anyone to move massive suitcases into the embassy without the knowledge of security forces. Argentinean police published a photo of a plane used to ship the suitcases, then filled with flour, to Moscow. Meanwhile, a Russian flight-monitoring website identified the plane’s tail number as belonging to a plane used by top government officials, according to reports. The website was taken down shortly after.

UW Issues Voting ID Card To Non-Citizen

MADISON, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin Madison is making a big GOTV push this year. In addition to hosting three early voting sites and putting extra resources into providing students with the documentation they need to register and vote – all students.

The two key documents are proof of residence and a photo ID. The university is making it as easy as possible to get these documents.

All students can print off a “Voter Eligibility Verification Letter” simply by going to their online university account. The process is automatic and instant.

For the state’s voter ID requirement, student ID cards don’t count, because they don’t have an expiration date. And so, any student can go to the union, present their student ID, and get a special student voter ID card.

When the university introduced the cards in 2016, Chancellor Rebecca Blank claimed, “For those non-Wisconsin students who are U.S. citizens but who don’t have a passport, the university will provide a voter ID card that complies with state law.”

However, as MacIver News discovered, the university makes no attempt to confirm students are U.S. citizens before providing them with voter ID cards.

After receiving the letter and ID card, students still need to officially register before they can vote. The university warns students they have to be 18 and a US citizen to vote.

The university’s process follows the letter of the law, but its casualness is cause for concern, as this video report demonstrates.
