Khomeini was almost a nobody at beginning of the initial protests against the shah in 1978/1979. In a classic deep state PR campaign he was introduced to the people as some sort of saviour. He was hauled off to France (from exile in Irak) and given an international stage, while all viable alternatives died in the incoming months. Propped up the lying media, stripped of all competitors, assisted by a fraction of traitors in the military, and targeting a naive public, it was pretty easy to install the "Death to America" regime.
