The embassy takeover was organized by a mullah called Khoeiniha (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohammad_Mousavi_Khoeiniha). He was also called the "Red Mullah", because he was a leftist who took orders from Russia. Soviet intelligence convinced him to go ahead with the plan, although senior figures within the regime had not given him green light.
Since on the highest levels (e.g., Kissinger or SHAPE) the cold war was fake, it would not surprise me that the entire crises was manufactured by the clowns. Remember the rescue mission also failed.
