BREAKING: Georgia Bureau of Investigation Launches Probe Into State’s Democrat Party
ATLANTA – After an alleged failed attempt to hack the state’s voter registration system, the Secretary of State’s office opened an investigation into the Democratic Party of Georgia on the evening of Saturday, November 3, 2018. Federal partners, including the Department of Homeland Security and Federal Bureau of Investigation, were immediately alerted.
On Monday, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirmed the are also investigating.
“The GBI has been requested by the Secretary of State to investigate allegations of computer crimes related to the Secretary of State’s website(s). A criminal investigation will be conducted by the GBI’s Georgia Cyber Crime Center,” the agency said in its statement.
Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp (R), who is running for governor, made the accusations two days before the midterm elections in which he is running against Democrat Stacey Abrams.
“While we cannot comment on the specifics of an ongoing investigation, I can confirm that the Democratic Party of Georgia is under investigation for possible cyber crimes,” said Candice Broce, Press Secretary. “We can also confirm that no personal data was breached and our system remains secure.”
