Twitter Is Organizing Against the Far-Right Trolls Hoping to Sway the Election, but Not Fast Enough

A group of far-right trolls had their plans exposed after they accidentally invited a reporter to their private Discord channel, according to a new NBC report. In the channel, the trolls discussed how to circumvent Twitter’s efforts to prevent the spread of misinformation on the platform aimed at lowering Democratic turnout this election cycle. The report found that though Twitter sometimes succeeded in vanquishing their plans, the trolls continue to adapt, and many of their strategies are working.

Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) is not doing so hot, especially in a deep blue state where there are nearly a million more registered Democrats than Republicans. This should be a slam dunk, but Republican Bob Hugin, who has spent more the 30 million of his own wealth, is making sure New Jersey voters know it’s time for a change, and that Menendez is a corrupt sleazebag.

It’s Election Day, and President Donald Trump and Republicans are lying relentlessly about health care and taxes to limit their losses among college-educated and suburban whites, particularly women — while lying relentlessly about immigration, nakedly race-baiting about minority Democratic candidates and vowing to keep Trump’s corruption beyond the reach of accountability to galvanize the blue-collar white GOP base.

It is often pointed out that Trump, by closing on a message of racism, hate, xenophobia, and ethno-nationalism, has placed those things on the ballot. That’s true, but what’s really on the ballot is the Trumpist GOP’s fusion of xenophobic ethno-nationalism with the GOP’s orthodox regressive plutocratic agenda..

Back in April, the first time President Trump tried to spark a race panic about a caravan of migrants heading to the southern border, the White House announced it would contemplate mobilizing the National Guard. To which Oregon Gov. Kate Brown responded that if asked, she would say: No. “I have no intention of allowing Oregon’s guard troops to be used to distract from [Trump’s] troubles in Washington,” Brown wrote on Twitter. It was one in a series of moves that would earn her praise as “the nation’s most progressive governor.”

Now, once again, a caravan of migrants has made its way from Central America to Mexico. And once again, Trump cannot stop talking about it. But Oregon’s governor is focused on something else: her own re-election campaign, which is closer than you would think for a Democratic incumbent, in a state that hasn’t elected a GOP governor in more than 30 years, in a year in which Republicans trail Democrats on a generic congressional ballot by 10 points. Has the blue wave left Oregon dry?
