Landlord Shuts Down Arizona Polling Station over Foreclosure Dispute

A landlord has shut down a polling station in Arizona’s Maricopa County on Monday evening over a foreclosure dispute, according to state officials.

In a video shared to Facebook, Maricopa County Recorder Adrian Fontes detailed the dispute leading to the station being closed on the eve of the midterm election. “Last night, apparently the landlord locked the door because the facility we were renting from is in foreclosure, which we perfectly unaware of,” said Fontes. “We’re printing new ballots for the voters and we’re also looking at other alternatives. We’re already in communication with the sheriff’s department.” “We may just go in and forcibly enter so that we can get all our equipment and serve those voters,” he added. CBS News shared a photo of the landlord’s lien notice taped on the front door of a Chandler building, where Gila Precinct residents were lined up to cast their vote.

CNBC: History Says Democrats Taking House Would Be Bad for Stock Market

If Democrats succeed in capturing the House of Representatives Tuesday, investors may see their savings suffer next year. CNBC reports that an analysis of historical returns shows that stock performance suffers when the House passes from one party to the other.

From CNBC:

Data compiled by Fundstrat Global Advisors showed the median stock-market return since 1896 was only 1.9 percent a year after the House majority flipped from one party to the other. Meanwhile, the median return totaled 16.8 percent when the House majority stayed the same after the midterms. Fundstrat used Dow Jones Industrial Average data to calculate returns before 1945 and S&P 500 data for returns post 1945.

Wall Street widely expects that the House will go to the Democrats this year, with Republicans keeping control of the Senate. Unexpected results could create a lot of volatility. If Democrats succeed in taking the Senate, most Wall Street analysts foresee a big downturn for stocks. If Republicans maintain control of both the House and the Senate, stocks could explode higher.

Record $5.2 Billion Midterms: Democrats to Outspend GOP by $330 Million

The non-partisan OpenSecrets website, which tracks political spending, projects the 2018 midterms will cost $5.2 billion, as Democrats outspent Republicans by $330 million.

Through the middle of October, Federal Election Commission (FEC) campaign filings disclosed that $4.7 billion had already been spent on the 2018 midterms, and spending was on track to hit $5.2 billion by November 6. That would make the 2018 midterms over a third higher than the $3.8 billion for the 2014 midterms, and more than triple the $1.6 billion in 1998.

Executive Director for the Center for Responsive Politics Sheila Krumholz commented: “The significance of this election is clear. But whether it’s a blue wave or a red wave, one thing is certain: A wave of money is surging toward Election Day, much of it coming from the wealthiest donors targeting this year’s most competitive races.” Over the prior five congressional midterms, Republicans spent slightly more than Democrats in each cycle. But 2018 Democrat congressional candidates are projected to spend more than $2.53 billion, versus about $2.20 billion for Republican candidates.

OpenSecrets reveals that Democrat spending was most dominant in 435 U.S. House of Representative contests where Democratic hopefuls raised over $951 million, versus just $637 million for Republican contenders. The funding difference in the 35 U.S. Senate contests for 2018 is narrower, with Democrats spending $513 million to just $361 million for Republicans.

OpenSecrets focused on 27 U.S. House races where, despite being rated “Likely Republican” by the Cook Political Report, GOP candidates just barely outraised their Democrat opponents by $2 million to about $1.95 million. For the 29 Republican House seats that were rated “toss-ups” by the Cook Political Report, Democratic candidates crushed GOP opponents by raising an average of $5.5 million to just $3 million. Democrats outraised Republicans in every quarter in the run-up to the 2018 midterm elections. In the last FEC filing for the October 1 through 17 pre-election period, Democrats raised $126 million to the Republicans’ $82.5 million.

Research Director at the Center for Responsive Politics stated that FEC data revealed that women and small donors fueled the Democratic 2018 midterm fundraising. Women donated $308 million to Democrats, versus just $90 million to Republicans. Democrats also leveraged their ActBlue online fundraising to collect over twice as much as Republicans in House and Senate races from small donors that give less than $200. Democrats are running on promises to overturn the Citizens United free speech decision of 2010 — ostensibly to keep big money out of politics.

San Francisco Spends More Than $385,000 to Register 61 Non-Citizen Voters

The city of San Francisco spent more than $385,000 to register non-citizen voters, but only 61 of those voters signed up to vote Tuesday in time for the midterm elections. John Arntz, the director of the San Francisco Department of Elections, confirmed with Breitbart News on Tuesday morning that the city registered 61 non-citizens to vote in local school board races, and reports say those votes came with a hefty price tag.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported last week that the city spent $6,326 per non-citizen voter— a total of $385,886 for 61 voters—to get them to vote in the school board elections. Part of the high price tag for votes came from having to set up a separate registration for non-citizens who cannot under federal law vote in federal elections. “We had to create a separate database,” Arntz said, according to the Sacramento Bee. “We created a separate ballot for these folks. We have separate roster pages for the polling places, we have a separate registration affidavit. We have a separate vote by mail ballot application, we have a separate website page.”

The city’s department of elections began registering non-citizens to vote in July, after residents approved “Proposition N” in 2016, giving non-citizens—including illegal aliens— the ability to vote in some local elections. But the San Francisco Department of Elections website warned potential voters that their voter registration information might be shared with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). “In addition, if you apply for naturalization, you will be asked whether you have ever registered or voted in a federal, state, or local election in the United States,” the website says. San Francisco followed the lead of Chicago, Illinois; Cambridge, Massachusetts; and several cities in Maryland in allowing non-citizens to vote in school board or municipal elections.
